Need some reassurance...(vent)

posted 25th Mar
I took my son to the doctor yesterday and he found out he is going to have to have his adnoids and tonsils removed.   At first I thought it was a common thing cause Ive known plenty of people who have had this done but, the first thing my sons specialist said was only 1 out of 35,000 people die from their surgery, ok not out of millions out of thousands and not hundreds of thousands but 35,000. That was not the way to come at a already stressed out single pregnant ! ! Seriously I wanted to cry right then and there but my son reacts towards my emotions cause were so close so I knew I had to keep it together. My son is only 3 so its not a outpatient one day thing. He has to stay over night. They aren't gunna schedule us for a few months, but umm im going to pop this kid out in a few months and I want to make sure my son has my full on attention and for me to be able to take the time off from work in that time to be with him. His dad his a self absorbed ass so its always been me having to deal with the ups and downs of having a toddler. Im scared stressed and feeling anxiety all over again.   God or someone from this site please let me know it would be ok. I need it cause everyone Ive talked to at home or with friends doesnt understand so im hoping to find another parent who has gone through this.

Thanks

I had this surgery done and I'm not dead...

it will be ok. I have no hearing in my right ear at all because I didnt get the surgery until after my tonsils swelled and the fluid killed the ear drum. Is this a preventative measure?

It will turn out fine

Girl your perfectly fine! I know how you feel.. my little sister had her tonsils taken out when she was about 8.. i freaked out whenher doctor toldme that! That morning when i was getting ready to take her i seriously reconsidered rescheduling or cancelling it all together! But i finally convinced myself she was okay and that she needed it. 2 of my sisters have hadthere tonsils removed and they are both perfectly fine!

Awe dont worry sweetheart!! I had my tonsils and adnoids removed when I was like 4 I think.. cause I kept having problems with my ears. I was completely fine afterwards! Actually, the only thing I can really really remember is how fun it was to eat popsicles and ice cream & not having to share with my older brothers cause I was the one that just had surgery.

He'll be fine though-- I promise!

He snores real loud (since practically birth) but he has exhasperated breathing (sc) and something else that i cant remember right now. So no he has to have it or his breathing will get worse and eventually mess him up. At least thats what I remember I was in shock most of the appointment.

It will be fine.My son had tonsils and adnoids removed along with tubes in both ears. It was emotional for me no doubt but I tried my best not to let him see me cry as they were taking him away. He was in the OR when they did the IV so I didn't have to see any of that. My son refused to drink so they did keep him for a few days. Now that my baby is 4 they want to take them (tubes) out but this is an outpatient procedure. I am going to have them taken out soon so I don't have to worry about this to close to having the baby. We are due close to each other.
I had it done when I was little too!
Also my son has a twin sister who may have to have her tonsils and adnoids removed too. I have held off because she has gotten better.
I know that may not be much help!!

No it does help. Its easy to say its gunna be ok, but he's 3 and to just think of him in a little bit of pain freaks me out. Damn doctor seemed to only tell me negative facts thats why im all weirded out.

My son JUST got his taken out last month. He is 3. It was an outpatient surgery for him. He did GREAT! Came through with flying colors. And his attitude is so much better now too, bc when he sleeps he is getting fully rested instead of the interupted breathing. However, I almost passed out when he was brought out and was sitting on my lap in the recovery room. My SIL did too when her oldest had hers taken out and she was prego with her son. Something about pregnancy and your child getting surgery apparently doesn't bode well with us momma's! So just a heads up about that. And his breath is going to smell like poop for a few weeks. It's normal. Definitely get them out before baby comes though, bc he will need his momma to spoil him with lots of popsicles and milk shakes.

I have never heard the statistics, but I don't know anyone who even had a bad time recovering, and i know lots of kiddos who had theirs taken out. The younger they are the easier the recovery.

Thats what the pamphlets said, his breath was gunna smell like funk for awhile. Im gladto hear it wont be too bad,Its just me being the mommy thinking about him layingthere knocked out is what gets to me. But thank you itdefinetly give a little piece of mind.

Dont worry everything will be fine. My son is 2 (almost 3) and just had emergency surgery back in Jan. Luckly when they told me how serious it was he was sedated the pain was too much for him becauseI broke down and cried my eyes out. I started to calm down and they handed me the anestesia (sp?) form to sign for surgery and out of this ENTIRE piece of paper the first thing I read was in the middle of the form said the words "coma or death". They werent hugh words or even in the first things listed but for some reasons that the first thing I saw. I lost it again of course (me the big cry baby when it comes to my kids lol) then my husband started reading it to and told me to look closerat all the things listed in front of those words like "damage to dentures andcomplications with pace makers" He just looked at mean and said "well baby he might need new dentures" lol We were at the hospital for a week after surgery after only going to the ER for a belly ache that wouldnt stop. By the time we went home he was back to his old self again. Its not as bad as it seems.

Your son will be fine. My daughter had her tonsils and adnoids taken out at 4 yrs old. The surgery was only a couple hrs and she was in and out. When she got out of surgery it will be hard for him to speak and he will be coughing alot. The doctors gave her popsicles to suck on and ice. The cold makes them feel better. Believe it or not....for dinner that nite she had McDonald's. LOL! So he will be fine. I was scared myself and everything turned out fine. She used to snore really bad before and doesn't now. My daughter is a q-tip fanatic and yesterday I took her to her pediatrician b'/c when she cleaned her ears the nite before it was bleeding. Well come to find out she put the q-tip too far in and pushed the tube really far back in her ear. So now she has an ear infection and is taking meds. The doctor said it will come back up after the infection goes away. So don't let ur son put q-tips in his ear...lol!!Other than that, he'll be fine. Good luck!!

My oldest son had his tonisils and adnoids removed a week after he turned 3. He did fine! Was kinda grumpy, they gave him pain meds and he was fine in a couple days. Me and my two younger bros had all our tonsils and adnoids taken out on the same day! (my mom was crazy) and we are all great. my adnoids grew back so I had them removed again when I was 19   I'm a freak of nature. But again, I did fine!
