Well, in newborns, especially breastfed newborns, it is hard.  It would be constantly going.  But, my daughter goes every time I feed her and it's not diarrhea.  I bf and she has watery poops.  Is your baby bfing?  How old?  It all depends on age and stuff

I see you were due on the 6th, so your baby is still young.  Lydia is almost 3 months and it's still watery.  I believe that diarrhea would be like non-stop pooping.  Lydia poops enough to overflow her diaper at least once a day.  And she does tiny poops with every feeding.  They are ALL watery.

Things to look for in a newborn if you're concerned they have diarrhea:
Fever
Dehydration (pooping only, not peeing)
Listlessness (is he active like normal or is he seeming "out of it")

it's normal to have watery poop until you start solids! if there are funky colours, you can talk to your doctor about it, generally it should be brownish for breastfeeding moms, and i think formula too, but i'm not sure about that. once solids start it will be thicker like peanut butter, but not always. it depends on the feeding schedual and the baby. if she doesnt seem to be bothered by it and its now "explosive", i wouldnt show too much concern. sorry if this doesnt make sense..i'm just sort of rambling my thoughts out, but i hope i can help! if you're still worried, the best idea is always to ask at your next check up! good luck!

You can tell if the baby is dehydrated if the soft spot on their head is sunken.

as a nurse we were taught in school that diarrhea was more than 6 runny stools in a 24 hr period.

Really? Ian is almost 8 weeks. He is breastfed & his poops are still very watery & usually orange-ish in color.

For the most part what you said is right, but breastfed babies have yellow or orangish poop until they start solids.  Lydia's diapers look like mustard

our pedi. said to soak their butts in water with 1-2 tbsp baking soda 2-3 times a day-and then dry well-if ithas little bumps, apply lotriminAF ( yes it is foot cream but works on yeast infections which is what alot of babies get due to the moisture)- and then apply aquaphor on top of that. it worked wonders in just 2 days!!!! ESP the baking soda water soaks- try to use as little water as you can like in the sink or shallow amt in baby tub.

I never knew about that.  Lydia hasn't gotten a severe one at all.  Just some minor redness sometimes.  That definitely gets taken care of by desitin.  But, if she ever gets a severe one, I will try that.

oh and the dr said when they do have a rash not to use wipes because they do burn- so to use damp paper towels and water with mild soap.
