Bring the boys back home II

posted 22nd Mar
Ok, so this one isn't just for the military wives... I was dumb to exclude a huge group of people in the very first post, so here's a new one.

In the last thread we established that among army wives there are basically 2 perspectives:
1. We need to keep troops in Iraq because we destroyed their country and now we have to have the humanity to help them restore it.
2. We should bring the troops home (not necessarily all at once, and not necessarily immediately) and try other means to help the Iraqis build their country.

We just had the 5th anniversary of our entering Iraq, and many political experts are questioning how many more we shall "celebrate" before "our job is done" (whatever that means). Both perspectives listed above understand that we made a mistake in destroying Iraq even if it is a good thing to have Saddam out of power, and therefore both perspectives understand that it is our responsibility to help the Iraqi people get back on their feet. The question is how? But I think to answer that we need to understand what it is exactly that the Iraqis need. Is it democracy? Is it a civil war? Is it Walmart and Hooters?

Thoughts?

Well, though I'm not a military spouse, I felt no problems jumping in on the first thread... but I'll post here as well, because that's what I do in D&D, heh.

For starters, my views are more in line with perspective #2. I don't think it should be immediate and abrupt, but I think the troops should be pulled out in an orderly manner. If we genuinely want democracy to take hold in Iraq, we need to let it form naturally and not impose our will upon it. We can still help the Iraqi people without having a military presence in their country.

they don't want us there in the first place... Lets get out like they have been telling us to for all these years.

I'm sure that's going to open up a whole can of worms but, that's how I see it.... Just don't put me on that watch list.. I'm not a terrorist!!!

so i know this might cause problems with a lot of people buti think our troops should stay in iraq...based on the fact that there are POWs in iraq and if we leave iraq then we will basically be signing a death warrant from them...my father in law has been to iraq several times he is in the Special Forces

There are a lot less problems in D&D, with regards to people's reactions to opinions.

I'm going with option number 2.

As far as the POWs are concerned, I don't understand that. I also don't understand the "do not negotiate with terrorist" policy. Its an absolute truthful thing to say, no negotiating should be done, butI can think of more than one way to solve that problem

so i dont understand the last part of what you wrote about the POWs...i believe when they have our soliders lives in their hands we should negotiate something terrorist or not

I don't think I've ever heard that reasoning to stay in Iraq. I think the POW's would be released duing the troop withdrawal wouldn't it? Because usually countries do not exchange prisoners until the the end of a war. Heck I don't know, lol.

I'm going with option 1 AND 2, maybe a little mix match of both would be the best solution.

Negotiating with an extremest of any sort is like trying to reason with a fetus. It's just not gonna happen.

I can't take an armchair warrior serious. I can't really get into these debates because people don't really have true, knowledgable backing for their opinions. (IE: You don't have a security clearance and only know what is not classified). There's a reason we all don't have this knowledge. I say leave it to the professionals.

They won't give us our POW's. Terrorists do not follow the rules of the Geneva Convention.

Neither does the government.
Terrorists are terrorists for a reason. Though nobody wants to admit it.

I agree Tid Bit, but I do have trust in my government. Not blind trust, but I do trust them. Things don't always go off with out snags here and there and it's tragic when innocent lives are at stake (miliary and civilian).

my means of negotiating would be to bulldoze them with force and save hostages. None of that, "Well, we'll give you 3 million dollars..." I mean be like, "Okay, you have some of our people, thats cool." and five minutes later they're getting a very loud knock on the door, but meh, you'd have to find them first. So I guess my plan is flawed
