Crib to toddler bed

posted 19th Mar
At what age or stage did you move your LO to their toddler bed?

Zachary is only 11 1/2 months old, so I know I have some time still left before then, but I was just wondering. He is already climbing, but hasn't (knock on wood!) escaped from his crib yet! So for now, he is trapped! LOL!

Thanks!

Most of the kids in my daycare class were moved between 12 and 18 months.

I would say when he starts climbing. One of the little boys in my class got his arm stuck climbing out and broke it in 2 places

Yikes! Maybe I do need to move him to a toddler bed already? The only thing that I am worried about is when we move into our new house in about a month, his room will be on one end of the house and our room on the other. I know I can gated him in, but he can about climb all the way over a gate already. Oh, the joys of motherhood! LOL
Thanks

If you are planning to move soon I would probably wait just because that is a lot of transitions for a baby to handle. I would keep him in his crib in the new house, and then transition him to a toddler bed when he more comfortable in the new house and it feels like home to him. Babies do better if you only do one major change at a time. He will probably be ok for 2 or 3 more months in the crib while you get him used to a new environment. And if you move him now you may find that you have to put him back in a crib in the new house because he can't adjust and doesn't feel as "secure" in the toddler bed

I probably will wait. It will be a huge change for me having him so far away, so I can only imagine how major of a change it will be for him. Thanks again

Oh yeah, if your little girl decides to come on the 3rd then she will share a birthday with my son! He turns the big number 1!

I moved my daughter into a toddler bed shortly after her turning one. I think I should have kept her in the crib becaues she would constantly get out of bed and play. I ended up putting a gate up at her door so at least she would have to stay in her room at bed time. But you want a toddler bed if they can escape or start climbing. I was just so excited to switch my daughter because my dad bought her a Dora bed and she loved Dora.

How cute! I hope she doesn't wait that long though! I am ready to meet her!

I think my DD was around 19 months when we switched her, I think we could have done it earlier though and she would have been fine!

Thanks ladies for your input! I think I am better off waiting until at least after we move. He will be 17 months when the babycomes somaybe even wait until after the baby is born and we have settled in a bit. Hopefully, he doesn't learn to escape before then though!

Hannah's Mommy- She will be here when she is ready! It sucks though! LOL!Zachary was actually due onMarch 24th and was contentbeing in my tummy so I had to be induced. I had a greatinduction and an awesome L&D, so I am happy with that too.

We never did toddler beds. We went from crib to bed around 25-26 months. We put up a little rail (you can get them from First Years I believe). Worked great. Did this with #1 and #2. Plan on doing it with #3 as well. She will about that age when this baby is born...we usually try to get them in a reg bed about 1 month before the baby comes. =0) No problems whatsoever. Just the usual getting out of bed at first....because they can. LOL It makes potty training TONS easier. You still have to get up with them when the need to go but at least they don't 'have' to go in a diaper if they have the sensation of needing to go and want to go to the toilet. =-)

GM- You always have such great advice! Thanks! Zachary's crib actually turns into a toddler daybed, so we plan on transitioning it when he is ready. My sister also gave us one of those rails, so YAY. I still think I will wait until after the baby is born though. I don't think that I will have started potty training Zachary by then. Well, unless he shows interest before than. Which leads me to a new question then....when did you start potty training your LOs? Zachary will be about 17 months old when the baby is born.

Hey ZMom!! My kids are spaced a little wider apart, so the timing worked out well for us in regards to bed set up. At 17 months, I personally wouldn't go to a bed. LOL I like mine contained until about 2, at least. My preference though. Potty training, I am actually relaxed on this somewhat. I wait and watch for signs of readiness. Usually about 24 mos or so. If they are showing signs earlier- I go with the flow. My boys NEVER liked peeing in the little porta type kiddy potties. So we got a small step stool and potty seat insert (one Dora, one Ducks lol) for each bathroom. And they could freely go there. But I didn't push or encourage at 17 mos, unless they had an interest. And sometiimes they did, but it faded quickly. Again I went with the flow. I do have an age cut off. 3. LOL They gotta be potty trained by 3. I used a reward system, there was no punishment or anything negative involved. #1 pee trained by about 25 mos or so but poopy training took until about 3. He had a major fear of pooping in the potty. #2 was pee trained by 28 mos and poopy trained by almost 3, a tad under. Not afraid- he was just stubborn. LOL

Oops sorry that was more than you asked for. Once I get started it's like my fingers keep talking!   Elektra is 21 mos and I am not even doing anything yet. She asks to go potty, we take her. She has yet to actually pee in the potty. She also does not like the little potty. She likes sitting on the Dora seat. ha! She has a paci, we'll kick the paci habit before kicking the diaper habit!

Those all in one crib n bed things are really cool. We got a hand me down crib and we will have used it for all 4 babies...so it's kinda neat. But we drooled over those beds! LOL

GM- No, thanks for all the advice! I was thinking that sometime around the beggining of the next year that we might consider switching his bed into a toddler bed. Hewill be about 21 months old. We will play it by ear though and hopefully he doesn't learn to climb out in the meantime. hehe!

With the potty training all that makes sense.Right now, Zachary is at that "what are you doing" stagewhen we go the bathroom. So we let him now what we are doing. I hope that doesn't sound weird! LOL! Unless he shows signs before we are definitely gonna wait until towards the end of the year to see if he is interested in potty training. With a newborn, I am sure that potty training is gonna be sooo much fun! hehe!

It is so nice to have another mommy to bounce questionsoff of and get advice from. I amalso on another message board from when I was preggo with my son, so I have all of them too. Ilove all my mommies though! Including you and all my other Septemeber mommas!Plus there is a bunch ofother helpful mommies on the website too!Rambling
