Ear infection
posted 16th Mar
Hi! One of my daughters has an ear infection. Let me tell you what has been going on, then I will ask the question.
On Feb. 27, we went to the doctor and she had an upper resp. infection and an ear infection in her right ear. Then , the next week, on March 3, she spiked a fever of 105.1. I took her to the ER (I took the meds that she was on as well). She had chest xray, and the influenza test. Both came back normal. But the doctor said that she now had a double ear infection. I was instucted to stop the amoxil. and to start her on cefidil. She took the 10 days worth of that and was fine. But just today, she woke up from her nap (330) crying and holding her ear saying "owie." She cried for nearly 2 hours. I gave her another dose of the cefidil but was told that it would take a couple days for it to begin working. I had to call my SIL to bring over some childrens tylenol. Her fever was at 100.7. She is sleeping again now.
But my question is - is there somthing higher than an ear infection? I mean, does it progress into something else? This is my first experience with ear infections. Also, is there any at home remedies I could be doing for her until we go to the doctor tomorrow morning?
Thank you baby gaga for your help!!

I'm sorry your little one is sick and in pain. As far as I know, any infection in the ear is considred an "ear infection." There are, however, different types of ear infections, which include inner, outer, or middle ear infections. It is possible to have an infection of all three at the same time, and from personal experience, when this happens it causes excrutiating pain. Have they told you what type of infection she has? It sounds likethe infection in oneear may have been wore than that in the other, and it alsosounds like she may need to be on a stronger anitbiotic than what they have prescribed. It is very possible that she is still fighting the original infection from 2 wks ago, or even that her eardrum has ruptured (whichmine have done several times, not fun).
As for at home treatment, continue to give her the Tylenol as long as she is in pain. You can also pack her ear with cotton (if she will leave it there) or use a pair of ear muffs to help keep air from getting in it, which, depending on the type of infection, can cause it to hurt. Also, try not to get that ear wet.If she would do it, have her lay on a heating pad on low, or put a blanket in the dryer until it is hot and have her lay on that. The biggest thing is to keep the ear dry and warm. Nighttime is when it will hurt the most (or nap time) because it allows the fluid to settle and irritate the ear where the infection is.
I hope this helps, and I hope she feels better soon!
