I have been successfully mix feeding for about 2 and a half years now!   My oldest DD is two and a half and I attempted to exclusively BF but did not produce nearly enough milk for my baby!   I was so sad, but realized that ANY breast milk is great!!   It was so much easier when I had DD #2 7 months ago! I realized from the start that I would need some help and she has had formula and breast milk from birth. I nursed her when she was born and that night I had to go into emergency surgery and she needed to eat while I was gone. I had a lot of grief from some mommies and it was hard, but I think mix feeding is awesome for me!! I love nursing, but my babies need more and that's ok! Glad to see there are more mommies these days that are cool with it!

I will be going back to work on July 30 and we are going to switch to formula. What's the best way to mix bm and formula? Right now I exclusively pump and give her a bottle of bm because we have thrush. She eats about 3 oz every 3 hours (she's 6 weeks tomorrow). And when should I start introducing the formula if I'm gong to stop pumping by the 30th and I want her on all formula by then? (unless we have left over bm and then I"ll mix until we run out).

If you know you are switching then yeah, a slow mix of more and more formula to BM would be an easier transition on the palate and tummy both.

Hi ladies..... I was just wondering if any of you has had to use medication for your milk supply? I have had issues since birth because I hemhoraged and became anemic and had to have blood transfusions... which led to low milk production and late milk coming in.... but I can only take it for one month and it is done in two days..... I am worried that my milk will go even lower once the medication stops. I am trying to be happy with whatever I get - I am pumping and supplementing as of now. I am only getting on average about 14 oz a day as it is now. Anyone else taken Reglan or medication to help with milk supply? Or had their breastmilk supply decrease more after awhile? My daughter is now 8 weeks old.......

I'd try natural stuff before Reglan--mothers milk tea is good. Fenugreek, or even more milk plus, though it's a bit pricey. Eat lots of oatmeal. Consider drinking a really hopsy beer a day (something dark like Sam Adams). Drink TONS of water. And KEEP stimulating! Nurse on demand, hand express or pump between feedings. The more the better.

I have been doing fenugreek..... and I can't have the beer because of gluten allergies to the malt and barley  So I will try the oatmeal.....

Try the mothers milk tea, too--like 5 cups a day if you can do it. You can generally find it in the organic/specialty section of the grocery store.

I used to have a very high milk supply, but due to a very bad plugged duct that turned into metisis (sorry a bout spelling) and became infected and made me really sick, now my milk supply is very low to the point im not producing enough at the moment and baby is eating so much all of a sudden i cant keep up!, Im pumping every 3 hours to try and get the supply to come back but im running out of bottles of milk for him,
I want to start supplmenting formula every couple feedings along with breast feeding every few feedings as well, but my mom is so against me doing such a thing that its like im going to poison my baby! and ive had it! i want to do this because its eassier for me, and i can satisfy my baby!

please i would love some info on doing this, i am so stressed out.

Don't feel guilty about doing this.... you can only do your best and your baby needs to eat! My dr. is very supportive and tells me to do what I can and supplementing isn't something you should feel guilty about at all! I am doing it and know that my milk supply will eventually (maybe sooner) run out on it's own so I am looking at it as any amount I can get is good and better than none! Don't beat yourself up! Your doing your best! My dr. suggested doing half breastmilk and half formula at a feeding.... or we do every other time with breastmilk - I guess it depends on how much milk you are getting each day. I get about 14 oz myself each day but my baby is going through about 24oz each day now. Just keep pumping though to keep it going and get as much as you can - I also pump about every 3 hours (not overnight though).
