thanks   hes got his 6-8week checkup tomorrow so i will ask then. im gutted because after he slept so well i was thinking about giving him 1 bottle of formula a night just for him to sleep longer but now hes not pooped i dont want to give him another bottle.

Hi ladies.... it is good to see others going through something similar..... I thought I would breastfeed while I was pregnant but had no idea how challenging it could be. My baby was born at 37 weeks and is fine on all accounts but for breastfeeding. She is more like a premie with that.... doesn't latch well; sleeps while feeding; and isn't consistent. Besides that she had jaundice which affected her feeding. Then I had a blood transfusion due to hemorraging after birth so my milk didn't come in until a few days later. All of that combined made for a difficult first week breastfeeding. I have tried everything that the LC and nurses suggested but I have had to do a combination of things and find out what worked for both my baby and me. I do SNS while breastfeeding first then if she is still hungry we give some more in a bottle (either extra breastmilk or formula). And then I pump three times a day which is all I can handle right now. Then overnight we do a bottle with breastmilk or formula. I am still not producing quite enough for her for every feeding ect. so now I am trying an herbal supplement called Fenugreek to help with milk production. My dr. made me feel a whole lot better though: she said basically it doesn't have to be perfect on way or the other- do what works best! It is ok! And as long as she is gaining weight ect. it is fine. After about two or three weeks I hear it gets better as they reach their actual due date and start to feed better as well as ask for feedings...... I am hoping that is the case!!!

Sounds like you are doing everything you can to make it work out!

Even if it doesn't, it'll be okay. I could never produce enough for my two boys in spite of months working with an LC and doing all asked each time.

I mix fed and ended up extended breastfeeding. I still breastfeed both!

I mix feed for the same reason, I simply don't make enough. With my first son, I could only mix feed for six weeks before having to go completely on formula. However, with my second son who's just over a week old, I can give him about 80% breast milk, and only fill in formula when nessecary. However, my son finds the bottle easier then the breast, so I pump my breast milk and feed it to him out of the bottle. To me, this is easier to keep up with how much he's eating and when. That, and the manual breast pump hurts less to me then having the baby latch on, lol. I'm sure that's just a personal opinion though.

So how do i get my LO to take a bottle? I have been onl;y bf and it is killing me! I cry evrytime she eats it hurts so bad seen 3 different LC and nothing is helping I have an appt with my ob wed to make sure no infection but the LC says everything looks fine, but it hurts so bad i cant take it anymore so i tried pumping and tried giving her formula but she hates the bottle tried 4 different bottles and she just screams til she gets the boob. I just dont know what to do anymore.

Have you tried the playtex nursers or mam bottles? Both are pretty nursing friendly.

how old is your lo? for the first week i was in agony when he latched id scream swear and cry but i perservered and after about 1-2 weeks it got better and now it doesnt hurt at all. the best bottle for me and the ones axel likes are tommee tippee closer to nature, and breastflow.

She is 2 weeks today, Ive tried playtex since thats what i used with my son, once my husband got home i had him try and give her the bottle she took the breastmilk from him but not formula but i think with me trying to give her the bottle she knows i have the boob

my lo will take breastmilk out the bottle no problem but fri i tried giving him a bottle of formula and he screamed and threw himself around for about 20 mins he took it in the end but it was tough. i think he just prefers the taste of breastmilk its a bit sweeter i think.

I mix feed as well. It's awesome seeing all the stories and advice.. I decided to mix feed because I have to go back to work in just a few weeks and I didn't know if I would be able to pump enough, or at work. While we were still at the hospital after DD was born I breastfed 20 minutes on both boobs...and then she started screaming..she was inconsolable. I had to get the nurse to take her for a few hours so I could sleep...she brought her back an hour later, screaming again. I BF for 10 minutes on each side and she was still screaming...so I decided to try formula right then. She drank 1.5 oz and crashed out! I just want her fed, healthy, and happy..so now we breastfeed first as much as she will do....sometimes it's for nearly an hour...other times it's only 10 minutes..and if she is still hungry I give her a bottle of either formula or bm. I've been pumping about 3-4 times a day. She is only 4 days old..but hopefully this continues to work for us! I am glad that she takes both since I do have to go back to work!

Hi I find myself conflicted, I nurse, but take many meds 120 a day Geodon, 6 lorazepam plus a prn. I'm to integrate formula, but am having the hardest time finding a balance. I've been hospitalized, but pumping faithfully

my son wont take formula   hes had it twice and didnt mind it then but now he just screams and spits it out trys to push the bottle out his mouth and chokes and also vomited when he finally drank some. he will take breast milk in a bottle but wont take formula for some reason.

Are the meds safe for bfing? If so, always BF first when you are going to BF, then finish with the bottle.

Could be a milk allergy--have you tried soy?
