re: Mixed Feeding Thread

posted 29th Oct
i have a 3 week old. he is mainly fed by bottle with breast milk and formula because i produce about 5 oz of milk every 5 to 6 hours, which is nothing! I drink bottle upon bottles of water, i eat all the right things, i get enough sleep yet.. NOTHING. To top it off, my LO still wont latch longer than.. 2 minutes.
I use similac advance which is what his pedi said was best. I've noticed when i DO feed him formula, he gets a little upset when he has a bm, so im thinking about switching to similac sensitive.
DOES ANYONE KNOW if similac advance and similac sensitive have the same values?

My son is primarily breastfed, but he gets so fed up sometimes with having to work for his food, that I just cave and give him a bottle of formula. It keeps both of us much happier when I dont have to fight with him for 45 minutes and keep squirting breastmilk into his wide open screaming mouth. Anyway, I've been meaning to ask this on here forever... What does your babys poop look like? lol He isnt on solids yet, and ever since I have been giving him a little bit of formula, his poop is like paste and its DARRRK green, almost black sometimes. And he only poops every 2 or 3 days. Normal? Thanks

well try reposting this in the breastfeeding thread were all really nice there and this thread moves really slowly, but if his poop is green alot it could be an imbalace in your milk.

I just asked my sons doctor this question few days ago, the paste dark green is normal, she said only worry if it smells so bad you feel like your going to vomit and it's extremely dark with a little bit of a rust color... and it's okay for babies to poop every other day, sometimes up to five days without pooping is normal.. As long as his poop isn't real hard or like a seed.... Also, if your lo hasn't pooped for several days and is acting like he needs to go and your worried, his doc said just by whiping his butt with a whipe and stimulating it can make him have a bowel movement, and it really does work after she did that, later that day my son went.. hope this helps. My baby will 5 weeks old tomorrow and so far I have only breastfed her but now I am wanting to give her bottles of formula during the day and only breastfeed at night which is what my doctor recommended me try doing. The thing is that I CANT get her to take a bottle. Everytime I try to give her the bottle she immediatly starts screaming or either holds it in her mouth and gags on it. Ive been trying to get her to take the bottle now for four days and have had no luck. Does anyone know what I can do? Thanks in advance for the help

The bottle you're using might be meant for older babies, so the hole is probably bigger and its putting too much milk in her mouth at once... Try getting some Breastflow bottles, they're most similar to breastfeeding. Why did your doctor recommend you only BFing at night? I'm gonna start doing there here in a couple months too.

ETA You might also try pumping some milk, and giving THAT to her in a bottle first. So she can have the familiar taste while she gets used to a bottle. Then switch her to formula in a bottle.

My son just turned 3 months and i always exclusively breastfed or use pumped milk in a bottle. Just recently though i started mixing formula with my milk to make full bottles because i always pump after feeding him so its never enough to get him full. Plus theres not enough time in the day to keep stocked up on pumped milk, i'll have 20 bags and after one night out i'll have half that if i'm lucky, so the formula just makes the milk go a longer way.
Only thing is he gets frustated and it takes about 3 feedings for him to go back to normal on the breast after being fed bottles. Should i switch bottles? would this help?

I have a 3 week old son. Yesterday, I started him on Similac Isomil Advance, he gets that every other feeding, and I nurse him the rest of the time. He hasn't pooped at all today, and normally he does after every feeding. Is this just him getting used to the formula? Or does it sound like he is constipated? Just curious what is going on? let me know!

He is probably just getting used to the formula. It's normal for some babies to go up to 5 days without pooping, until it gets to 4 or 5 days i wouldnt be worried. If you want you can call your baby's doctor and ask what the suggest to get things going down there   Sometimes it just takes them a while to get their system used to the formula

I went through something kinda like this with my son. It will take a few days of HELL for you. Nurse him as often as possible. Just nurse and nurse and nurse. Even if you just have to give him a little bit at a time, and let him snack every hour or so. This will help to build your supply back up so your milk will come out faster and sooner. Try getting your milk to let down before he latches on... Good luck!!! You might also post this in the BFing thread, i bet they'd have lts of advice in there.

You might also try getting a nipple shield. It makes it feel like he's sucking on a bottle, not your boob. Good luck!
