re: Mixed Feeding Thread

posted 16th Mar '08
i was just searching for a thread like this the other day! Good to see one here! We just started him on formula last night be fore bedtime and he slept for 6 hours! it was nice   I dont want him on formula but my supply has recently dwindled down a bunch and my son's appitite has suddenly pickedup! I pump the milk out though because of severly cracked nipples after the first week or so! i try to put him on my breast since they have kind of healed but it's not as easy anymore...he just gets frustrated and so does mommy   i want to keep puttinghim on my breast! but i dont see it happening...

If you really want to try, I'd recommend seeing a lactation consultant before you give up--mine was wonderful! While I never did get my supply up, she really did know her stuff--and the help latching in the hospital is why I am still BFing along with the formula today!

Ohhh, I like this thread. I do both because I am always on the go, and if I'm somewhere uncomfortable, it's not easy to breastfeed. I do BF in public, but at some places it's just NOT going to happen.

Sometimes though, Lyric will protest the bottle... but he'll always take it later when he realizes that the boob isn't coming out of the shirt.

Good to see this thread and now I feel less guilty. My daughter is 3 months old and we have had breastfeeding issues from the start I fed her mostly breast milk in bottles from about two weeks she lost weight and was jaundiced and early. Then from about 3 weeks to 8 weeks we mostly did just breast and then when she hit two months I went back to work and she had finally become a good BF feeder. I pump and try to feed breast milk as much as I can but there are times when we give formula. I dont have a storage supply aside from whats for the next day and so we just give her formula as needed. She seems ok with goign between the two. I was worried about BPA so we used or tried to use Adiri bottles she hated them and we tried others. She will take the Avent and Drop ins fine so we alternate between the two my grandparents dont wanther to only take one kind and they are the sitters.

Hey everyone, just wanted to say GOOD THREAD! I've been mixed feeding will since he was 1 week old due to major supply issues. We're still doing both breast and bottle and he's almost 10 months old. I'd be happy to help if anyone has any questions. Most exclusive breastfeeders I've talked to have not only looked down on me for having to start formula (like I had a choice in the matter) but kept saying I wouldn't be able to breastfeed for more than a couple months. We've sure proved them wrong!

Six months here, and a similar story! Breastfeeders look down on you, and bottle feeders wonder why you bother--that's my experience.

Still--I've done the best I can do for my son, and am happy in that knowledge!

Good for you for the same!

Okay my supply is still down.. does anyone have any advice to get it back up?? i've been putting him on my breast to try to stimulate the milk or something but i'm still only getting about 4-5 ozcombined....andi get that MAYBE twice a day. I really would like him to only get formula at night and breastmilk the rest!

Have you tried fenugreek pills? You can get them at any health food store, I take two a night and it helps. The tea just gave us both the craps, but the pills worked pretty good.

ok what is bmp or whatever it was mentioned...
i am a mixed feeder.. i didnt want to be i wanted to just breastfeed... he wont latch on so for the past 2 weeks i have pumped like crazy and he would take in majority breastmilk at first and then i noticed my milk supply wasnt worth poo... every day it was les and less. for the past week all i have been able to get out are maybe 2 ounces at a time so Haeden is mainly formula fed right now....
it saddends me that i cant breastfeed or that i wasnt able to get him to latch on but at least now i know i have a healthy baby and he eats when he wants how much he wants and not just have to be satisfied with the little bit of breastmilk that i was able to give him.
everyone the is trying to breastfeed good for you!
