Yeah, at first I thought it was because she was really small (5 lbs at birth) so maybe she would be able to use them when she was older...tried them at around 3 months, and still she couldn't get anything out of them!  Then I thought maybe it was because we tried a nuby standard, so I tried the wide...no dice..nuby just does not agree with her!  I was sad, though, because we got some cool nuby sippy cups for when she's older...oh well...at least BRU here takes everything back, I just got a gift card to spend on more baby stuff

What does the stool look like when it's from breast milk? And from forumla? How often does the baby soil the diaper with breast milk? And from formula?

BM only stools look like they have cottage cheese curds in them and are kinda liquidy. Darwin's were more of a brown w/ green tint color. Typically BM only stools are quite frequent - 3 or more a day. That being said, a BM only baby can go up to a week w/o a stool.

Formula only stools have more of a gritty texture like a bowl of grits. Darwin's formula stools were yellow. His stools are about once a day or every other day.

A stool from BM and formula will be somewhere in between -- it depends on if the feeding was more one than the other, half and half, etc.

Thanks. I started getting a little worried when Riley wouldn't have a bowel movement after a day anda half had passed.

Alright ladies, lets see if this befuddles you as much as it befuddles my SIL and I...

My daughter is mostly breastfed, and then 2-3 bottles of formual (most of the time only at night)... Wether she is drinking pumped milk or straight from the tap, she spits up almost every single time. But she RARELY spits up formula. We know it's not a milk reaction since she handles the formula fine, and I cut out caffine for 5 days and still had the same reactions... What else could be causing her to only spit up breastmilk?????

Perhaps there's something in your diet that her stomach can't handle...as if her body is allergic to something and trying to remove it from the system.

1. Do you eat foods w/ peanuts? (processed in peanut plants, made w/ peanut oils, etc etc...)
2. Are there fruits you eat a lot that are known allergens? (like strawberries, blueberries, etc)
3. Could it be wheat related? Wheat allergies are common in kids...and the symptoms show up as ADHD! (in older kids)

I've been looking at what I eat, and nothing really pops up WARNING! I don't eat much nutty stuff, strawberries maybe TWICE since she was born, and not very much wheat... My niece has wheat allergies and it affects her diapers, but not spitting up... Taylor's diapers are normal... Right now we are still using the free formual, and the only thing that has changed at all between Taylor's diet and mine is we are now using Enfamil instead of Similac... I dunno... We are almost out of the Enfamil and then we will be on Goodstart for at least a couple of months so if her spit up goes away then, I guess I will know if it's the formula if the spit up subsides once on Goodstart...

I mixed fed...and I will do it with every time! My baby crawled out of the womb, climbed up me and latched on...I had no problems at all (I know it is very hard for others). I started pumping pretty early, because I wanted to stock up. I never got the hang of that, and ended up feeding her pumped milk from the bottle often. Daddy loved it because he got to be a part of it all. When I went back to work I pumped 3 times a day, but she needed 5 feedings while away, so she had 2 formula bottles a day. It also made me feel better about the nutrients that she was consuming. Breast milk does not come with a label, and I know it is so very healthy, but being able to read that the formula was chocked full of nutrients and vitamins made me feel more at ease.

I am doing mixed fededing because my son was losing weight on bfing alone. On the day the was born there were 11 babies born and the nursery was really busy. He would latch on right after birth so they took him to the nursery and said he would be back in an hour. Well 3 hours later they brougt him to me. He was so worn out that he would barely latch on. He had severe jaundice so he was really lathargic and he wouldn't nurse for more than 5 minutes at a time. I have tried pumping and even if he hasn't eaten before hand I barely get anything from my left breast and maybe half to 3/4 of an ounce on my right. I'm trying fenugreek now and I asked dh to pick up some beer (gross- why couldn't it be wine?) so I can try that. He gained 6 oz in 3 days with mixed feeding. I wish I could exclusivley bf, but I want to do what is best for my baby boy.

Fenugreek has been working good for me, but I keep forgetting to take it! Also, make sure to drink lots and lots of water.
