re: Mixed Feeding Thread

i've been feeding my baby a bottle of formula a day for almost a week now? and she's been pooping way less, if once a day...and i've been going on with the breastfeeding...i was wondering how long this should last or if there's something i can give her for constipation?

Is she grunting and struggling to pass a bowel movement or simply not pooping more than once a day? If she does not aappear to be srtuggling I would not worry. She may just be needing everything she is eating. When I was an infant i didn't poo for 3 weeks, but no constipation

I was on Reglan for 3 or 4 weeks. My experience with it is bad. I have PPD and got it around week 3 of Reglan. This is a med that's not supposed to be used for more than 2 weeks when used to increase milk supply. AND you're supposed to slowly decrease the amount you take over those two weeks.

Domperidone isn't sold in the USA b/c it's not FDA approved. You'd have to get it thru Canada, which for me, is a huge red flag to stay away from it. It's been associated w/ law suits b/c of its side effects.

Frequency of poopie diapers decreases around a month old. My lil guy is 6.5 weeks old and poos about every other day.

Hello...new to this thread.
I am breastfeeding...almost exclusively but have started to introduce formula at night time feedings/
sometimes my daughter nurses almost every hour and it just wears me out...especially at night.
so I have decided to mix a bottle of breastmilk and formula at her nighttime feedings...to hopefully help her sleep longer than an hour in a half-two hours.
It hasn't worked so well..the past two nights, so tonight I am going to try a full 3oz of formula, and see how long she sleeps.
She spent a week in the nicu when she was born and has been home for two weeks now.
I have yet to get more than 4 hours of sleep in one evening. she actually seems to feed more during the evening/night. ANYONE ELSE RELATE TO MY POST? HAVE ANY ADVICE OR FEEDBACK?
i breastfeed her exclusively during the day///or expressed milk in a bottle.

I am a mixed feeder as well.  Stefan is now 10 days old and I've had to mix feed to get him to settle, my breast milk still hasn't fully come in.  I've been pumping/feeding every 2 hours during the day and every 3 hours at night but now I'm slacking off a bit on the times due to my breast burning after the feeds/pumping.

I always try to give him the breast before a formula.  Often taking the breast will make him go to sleep, but he will only sleep for 30 mins max after an hour or more of breast feeding.

Not sure why I have trouble with my milk, but I have my theories.  I was induced at 38 weeks with pessery (sp) gel, due to gestational diabetes.  After getting contractions and only dialating to 2cm after 28 hours of the gel, they broke my waters and hooked me up to the syntocin drip (as well as insulin and glucose).  8 hours after that was only 4cm so emergency c-sect was ordered as I'd had the max dose of syntocin (He was in the wrong position).  After the delivery he had a bit of low blood sugar so had to have formula in addition to breast.

So due to either the stress of the delivery or the fact he was supplemented from the start my milk production has suffered.  I actually only started getting milk about 5 days ago so who knows I might be able to fully breastfeed, but I'm not going to hold my breath on it.

Currently I'm having to give him almost a full formula feed.  If I pump (without him feeding first)  I'm lucky to get 1oz between the both breasts, less if he's fed first.  Yes I feel guilty about it and yes it still makes me cry a bit sometimes when I think about it.  But finding this thread has made me feel a little more supported in my decision in following my instincts (I had to beg for a top up for him on the last days in hospital - after 2 days with no sleep cause he was constantly on breast or crying for food).

My lil guy was in NICU for a day and bottle fed donated breastmilk the 4 days he was in the hospital. My milk came in but it never came in an ample amount. I had a partial breast reduction 8 years ago so the milk ducts/sacs in my right breast are severely compromised. Hence I was a mixed feeder.

We did one ounce breastmilk and supplemented with formula...so it started out 1oz bm and 1oz formula then 1oz bm and 2oz formula so on and so forth. For the first 2 weeks we didn't more than 2-3 hours sleep at night. Then it was 3 hrs consistently. And now at 7 weeks old, he sleeps 4 hrs at night.

Perhaps having only formula now (I stopped pumping and we just ran out of frozen breastmilk) helps him sleep 4 hrs...but I think it's just a time thing. Sleeping longer at night takes time.

Don't feel guilty!! Please don't cry!!

DH turned out to be a breastfeeding fanatic which made me cry b/c my supply sucked balls. After much frustration and nagging from both our moms, he did extensive research on formula. The DHA and ARA added to Enfamil Lipil is just as good as breastmilk from a brain and eye development standpoint.

Great! I've slacked off for a day & half and now my milk production has gone down to a little less than half   I've been so tired lately and it doesn't help that I've been on the go either.

Blah!!!!

I know this is a couple months behind, but adison has the same problem.  She can take Avent Wide, VentAire Wide, Dr. Brown's or gerber orthodontic (neither of which is not wide, go figure?  but she can't take a regular gerber standard nipple!).  Oh, and she just recently started drinking from Soothie bottles, which look wide to me!  She has NEVER been able to eat from Nuby bottles, either wide or standard!  She sucks and sucks for like 20 minutes and only gets about an ounce out of the bottle...so....I put aside the bottles we had opened and returned our unopened nuby brand bottles....we got so many different types of bottles at our shower, we decided it was a good idea to keep the various types to try them out in case she rejected some of them.

we haven't got Enfamil here in NZ (well that I know of) but I'm currently feeding him Karicare infant which is the same that the hospital supplimented him with, he seems to do ok on it.  I guess I'm lucky, my DH is very supportive either way, he's happy to give Stefan the formula when he needs it.

I've just been a bit upset cause all the nursing and pumping hasn't seemed to have helped my production at all.  It also doesn't help that now I have a cold too
