Lap Band & Gastric ByPass

posted 27th Aug '11
For a school essay, there's actually only 3 pages about both in my book, can y'all help me out some from what you know? I'm looking through the rest of my book to see if there's more in the back or something, but I'm not finding anything yet.

The most common procedures today on the digestive system are the gastric bypass and the lap-band. There has been some controversy over the dangers of these procedures. Based on what you know about gastric bypass and the lap-band, describe the difference and two dangers of each procedure.

The dangers are pretty similar. With the Gastric bypass you do have the added risk of stomach perferation. Does the question mean dangers to do with the surgery or what potential complications could happen?

I know lapband is non-evasive where as gastric is evasive, but i'm not sure of the dangers of each.

I don't know much about either of those but I do know that I just had to do a ton of research for school and they gave us certain research databases (that were actually linked on my schools website) I just had to go to my schools website look up the library part and they had a list of research databases to use that are all very factual. Some of those are
GALE,
SIRS ,
EBSCOHOST,
Global Warrior.

I'm not sure if your school has this but its worth a shot to look.

Good luck!

I reread the question. The difference between the 2 is with the bypass you are both restricting food inake and bypassing part of the intestines causing temporary mal absorbtion. With the band you are only restricting food intake.

Complications with bypass include ulcers/ strictures/ dumping syndrom/ vitamin and mineral deficentcy, obstructions.

Lap band include the band slipping/ finding the correct fill amount for the band can be very difficult. Obstructions.

Did it feel weird? Or could you feel anything at all.
If I have questions it'll be either out of curiousity or for school.

Not long. You just kinda have to know your limits.

I used part of what you said [the bypass part] and my professor said she liked how I know my facts and wants me to site my sources. I told her I was talking to a friend about it because it's what she had, so she knows about it. >.<
