re: How much do you spend per child for Christmas?

posted 23rd Aug '11
We spend maybe 150. 400 is a lot. Christmas isn't about gifts to me. Then Jett will grow up expectin me to give him tons of presents on Christmas. When it isn't even about that.

I think it is nice to go by age! for our LO's first Christmas, she got one gift, for her 2nd christmas she got two gifts, for her 3rd Christmas which is this one coming up, we will do 3 gifts.

Maybe now would be a good time to down size a little bit on what they expect. Are you religious at all?

Quoting Ailey+Lennon+Renner's Mom:" i usually go completely overboard with Christmas time, last year we spend a few nights at a resort, and ... [snip!] ... 400 each? is that about average? how many presents does your child get and how much do you spend on average? thanks!!"

I will probably spend a bit more on my older girl (6 y/o) than I will the 1 y/o but still I am only guessing to spend about 100-200 each tops. But then again I got a lot of their presents already some sales and clearance.

Quoting Mom to three♡:" I have 3 kids and I'll probably spend 1200-1500. I'll start shopping this next month."

wouldnt you rather have that money in a savings acct for them when they are grown? LOL

how many toys and outfits does a kid need?

My parents always got us that amount of gifts OP, I don't think you're crazy. I do agree that Christmas isn't all about the gifts, but if you can afford to do that and still put savings back the rest of the year, then go for it!

This is how we feel as well. Plus, my kids do not need 50 different toys to play with, nor do they need to be keeping up with the Jones' on the newest hippest toy.

I just can't fathom any child getting that many gifts. My son Would be overwhelmed my 20 new toys at once.

Right? How can they manage to play with and enjoy each toy when there are so many? Eh to each their own I suppose.

mine would be more interesting in the wrapping paper then the toys!!!

I am so glad I don't' make gifts a big deal during the holidays, she is only two but we keep it simple. Maybe one big nice gift, then a new coloring book and crayons or something along those lines.

Really it all depends on your personal budget. I really don't think there is a "normal" amount or a "right" amount. Sometimes you have to do with less, right now there is a recession and many people are feeling the pinch and so need to spend less then they would like. But remember Christmas is not really about the presents you get for your children but he special time you get to spend with them! If you are feeling the pinch there are many special things you can do that they will remember forever, past when all the toys are broken! Have a special Christmas tree decorating party with the kids and some family to help you out so you can still concentrate on you and your new infant. Or maybe have some special Christmas cookie baking/decorating time. Make homemade Christmas cards with the girls for special people in their life with paper, macaroni, and crayons! These are the things they will remember because they got to spend those times with their very favorite person....you!
