2 year old eye crossing

posted 16th Aug '11
My 2 year olds right eye keeps turning in (Cross eyed). I took her to an optomitrist a couple of months ago and he said she was fine and didn't notice her eye turning and it was "normal" for this to happen in kids...I know it's normal for very young infants but not 2 year olds!!. I have been noticing it happening more often latly and I made an appointment with her Pedi for Friday

I guess my question is what will my Pedi do what can a Pedi do?? and why on earth would one eye be crossing when 2 different eye Drs say her vision is fine (A little far sighted but normal for her age?)

I'd definitely get a second opinion with another eye doctor.

Might be a lazy eye, like when she gets tired or unfocused... My friend had that when she was little and had surgery to correct it when she was about 10...

I would keep trying different optometrists honestly.
I know that a newborn baby does that a lot trying to focus,
but I've never heard of being normal at the age of two. Not to scare you,
but my niece did that around sixteen months, and they took her in and now she is almost completely blind. Her glasses are so thick, it is pitiful, but mostly just on that one eye. They are trying to correct what they can, and then possibly surgery in a few years when she is older [she is now eight].

Stick to your guns, if you need three opinions or even four, go get 'em :]
I'm not sure what the Pedi can do.. maybe they can at least refer you to a better eye doc. Good luck.

My daughter is considered cross eyed even though we don't really see it happen much. She has been wearing glasses since she was 3. She is now 6. Did you take your child to a optometrist that specializes in kids?

This exact thing is happening with our 2 year old. We are taking him up to a specialty doc for a second opinion at U of M next month.

No, My stupid insurance won't cover the children optomitrists in town, so I went to my optomitrist and then another one that see kids but not specialized in children. I can't go to the children one in town unless I get a referal from the Pedi because they won't take Medicaid (I used my primary insurance for the other exams and can't get another one for a year) unless I have a referal for any kids under the age of 3!! Ugg, I know somthing is up I just wish people would tell me its "Normal" when I know its not!!!

The Pedi is the 3rd person I am seeing about this issue...Hopefully she wont blow me off!!

I;m sure the pedi will give you the referral you need. I know its not normal, my daughter had to get bifocals this year because her other lenses were not correcting the problem. These ones seem to be helping.

My two year old right eye is crossing inward. We just noticed yesterday were going to call his pedi and she what she says since we are concerned. Let us know what information you get, I heard from a friend that its normal but if its frequen the child may need an eye patch to strengthen the muscle.

Please dont let this scare you... I'm only telling you because I think you need a second opinion, but have they done a head CT? A friend of mine had a daughter who was around 2-3 and had her eyes crossing all the time. Turns out it was a brain tumor. Hopefully it's just a lazy eye, but please get another opinion just in case.

Took my two yr old son to the eye doc. Turns out he has amblyopia in his right eye (lazy eye) and has to get glasses. I've heard that by the age or 5-7 he may not need the glasses anymore. I'm glad I know what it is now and caught it early.
