Hoarding and children. D&D

posted 2nd Aug '11
So, I am fascinated by the show "Hoarders." As I'm watching it tho, I notice a LOT of them are at risk for losing their children because of their hoarding.

Do you think CPS should be called on a hoarder? Do you think they should seek treatment and up keep their home a certain amount of time before getting their children back if they do indeed lose them? Or do you think they should be forced to clean up, and if they don't THEN take the children? Like, should the children still be in the environment while the clean up is still going on?

How much is TOO much that you would call on someone? There is a difference between a messy home, and down right hoarding. If you would call CPS on a hoarder, would you call it on someone who didn't clean their home very often?

Sorry for so many questions. I'm just curious tonight. Some of these episodes are sad, but at the same time, I do notice they want to change and they do love their children.. but it is a mental illness in a way and they have a very hard time with the clean up.

I dunno.
Some of those on that show are SO DAMN BAD...like...dead animals under the mess bad.

And i would hope that people with children wouldn't do that. But they do.

And they can't help it. But neither can the children.

There was one...and the woman had adopted the kid...and her house was SO full of smurf.
But none of it was rotten old smurf..it was all brand new clothes and shoes and toys that she "compulsively" bought for the adopted kid.

So much...that three quarters of it the kid never wore..and it was all piled everywhere.

I don't think that kid should have been taken away. I mean..yeah her house was FULL of clothes and toys..but they were all brand new..tagged for the most part.

I don't kno9w.

I seen on there one time that the family was sleeping outside in a tent because of bed bugs. To me that is when a child should be taken away. The fact that you would rather sleep outside then clean up your house for your family amazes me. But i think that the children should be taken away or at least be made to stay with a family member. Most of those homes a mouse should not even live in it. Everytime i watch it i get up and clean my entire house!

If you can't walk around in the house and it's a huge tripping/fire/avalanche hazard, then a child shouldn't be there or the hoarder should be told they need help asap or their child should be taken away.

I love that show, too.

Some of those houses are so smurfing gross. Like the one where the poor old lady had pissed on her floor so many times that it ate a hole through the ceiling? Ugh. So sad. And like, where the smurf were her kids to take care of her?

Anyway, when it's that bad, with like, actual garbage and hazardous stuff, I'd call. If I really thought it was a health hazard. By all means I'd call. Just for a house that's dirty? Meh. It'd have to be pretty goddamned dirty for me to feel like it was my place to call the authorities.

Ideally, the kids should probably be out of the home for clean up, because of mold and whatever weird gross smurf gets unearthed during the process.

Except...the CLEANEST house can have bedbugs.

They cannot be gotten rid of by just cleaning.

You have to heat your whole HOUSE to a certain temperature to kill the bedbugs.

It's expensive...and not easy.

I know that but the fact that they would rather make their children live outside in a rent then take the time to clean their house makes me sick

I saw that one, too. If it weren't for being on Hoarders, they'd probably still be sleeping in that damn tent.
