re: Hoarding and children. D&D

I dont exactly understand their classification for "HOARDING". There are hoarders on there, then there are down right lazy, nasty people. I think there is a difference.

I agree with a lot of this. The things that scare me are the mold, feal matter, dead animals, etc.

One womans son had horribleee asthma and breathing problems. Once the house was clean he started getting better. But like, I don't know what I would do with myself if my hoarding caused my child to become ill and suffer.

I think it depends.

Some of those people have rotted food, dead animals, and mold abounds piled everywhere. That is a hazardous environment for ANYONE to be living, but especially a child. In cases like that, I would suggest SOMEONE be called, if only to get the hoarder help and make the home safer for all living there. If need be, yes, temporarily remove the child from the situation.

But for those people that just buy compulsively and have mountains of new items laying around? Hell no. Who cares if they're a messy housekeeper, as long as the place is safe. Shoot, I have too much stuff for the space I have, so some of it is piled in the hallway and in our room.... it's safe, it just gives Elf things to climb on.   The house is clean though, just cluttered.

I think there is a difference between hoarding, and just being messy. I mean, with hoarding they begin to have this attachment with most everything and feel like they can't get rid of it because it has memories attached to it, or some thing. It makes it very hard for them to give it up.

Most people who are messy just don't don't feel like cleaning it up, but have no problem tossing things in the trash.

Cluttered is understandable. It happens. Sometimes my house is cluttered as well, but it's more or less an organized clutter. lol.

No, I know. I just don't think people should lose their children for hoarding. Unless it's like, hoarding completely hazardous materials.

My aunt was a hoarder. Not of anything unsafe, just of things. Books, clothes, toys. She saved everything, hit up every yard sale. EVERYTHING. It was all safe and clean, it was just everywhere. She raised two children in a house made of things. Was it a normal upbringing? Nope. Did it cause problems? Yep. BUT she always made she the girls were cared for.

She died before she got help with her hoarding, and one of her daughters has it as well, but the oldest totally cleaned out the whole house and it's just lovely now. I'm so proud of them.

But yeah, I think it depends on what they hoard before it becomes a matter of removing the children.

I agree. I do however, think many of them do need to seek help at the same time. But if it is imposing risks or affecting the health of the children, I do think maybe someone should step in until it is under control.

I do feel seriously bad for these people tho. Many of them have suffered some kind of emotional trauma, and do have some form of a mental illness. I feel even worse for the ones who are elderly and simply have no help and can't maintain it on their own. Sometimes the show is just heart breaking.

I think that the children of seriously bad hoarders should be removed from the unhealthy & dangerous environment immediately. When there is cat feces under the bed... Urine, & a disgusting dirty mess throughout the home it is dangerous on the child's health & psyche. It's about time everyone thought more of the well-being of the child than that of the mentally ill hoarder. The problem with the OCD'ed hoarder is that many times they don't want to get better. Child Services gives them sufficient time to get help & clean up their place. Sometimes hoarding means more to them then their children.

I love watching those shows too. I watched the one on TLC called hording: buried alive. Someone from the school came and reported the lady to CPS. I completely agreed. The conditions of the home were disgusting. They gave this woman 48 hours to clean up and get electricity working in half her home. She had been attempting to clean but couldn't do it on her own. She was devastated at the thought of her children being taken away. I know she made that mess. But it didn't happen overnight. It bothered me that they gave her two days to clean up the mess with no resources. How is she suppose to do it by herself in 2 days? It mad me mad that the kids had to grow up like that. It made me mad that they were leaving this woman to an impossible task. If it wasn't for her being on the show her kids were going to be taken from her.

Quoting Black Dynamite:" So, I am fascinated by the show "Hoarders." As I'm watching it tho, I notice a LOT of them are at risk ... [snip!] ... change and they do love their children.. but it is a mental illness in a way and they have a very hard time with the clean up. "

I think there is a certain point where children should be temporarily taken away, or moved to another family members home, until the parents have cleaned up their home- or at least made a serious effort. Hoarding is a serious problem, and it's a legitimate one. Speaking for myself, I have slight hoarding tendencies, only with my daughters baby stuff- anything that reminds me of her infant years. I didn't even realize I had the tendencies until I was cleaning my closets, and had serious problems throwing things away- like a deflated folded up balloon from her 2nd birthday. Since that day, when I discovered that I have possible hoarding tendencies, I've been keeping myself more in check and I've improved immensely. I never let my daughters room, livingroom/kitchen etc get more than normally messy- However, my room is the catchall- but I've been working to change that lol. I'd be pretty shocked if someone had children taken away even though they were doing their best to change their hoarding behavior- unless the home is unlivable and unsanitary/dangerous, then I think the parents should be given a chance.
