My D&C experience

posted 1st Aug '11
I figured I answer the question enough, so instead of typing it out repeatedly I would post a thread to inform anyone needing one and to have as a reference for myself to copy and paste in the future.

My D&C September 2009:
I went to the hospital in the morning and did all the appropriate checking in. Went back to the pre-op area for more questioning, got changed, and had an IV started. They started fluids through my IV. Then I was given a cocktail of medications to help relax and start to sedate me. They rolled me back to the operation room on my stretcher, during transport the drugs started kicking in. I assisted them in sliding from the stretcher to the operating table, I was hazy at this point. They put the oxygen mask on me and told me to breath regularly. I was out within seconds.

I woke up in recovery kinda foggy with mild cramping. They gave me some meds for that right away. I stayed in post-op for about an hour, then moved to the holding area for a bit more observation for about another hour or two. I was advised to take Motrin for any discomfort or cramping. I bled the first 2 days, though not real heavily. Then spotted about another day or two. No real cramping that was noticeable. Considering the reason for the procedure, the recovery was easy peasy physically. I was able to care for my 1 year old daughter that same day with out an issue.

I was 12wks "pregnant" and the baby had died at 8wks. We found out at 11wks and opted for the D&C.

Please do not hesitate to ask any/all questions you may have.

This was very nice of you. I know alot of women are terrified of the experience and it's nice for them to know what to expect and it's not like "labor" and such as some describe it. I went through two D&C's as a teenager. Stupid mistakes with big prices, but it's life.

Thank you. I figured that it happens so often on here it would be nice for some to have a point of reference as to what to expect. Of course every experience can be different but others are absolutely welcome to post their experience if it varies.

I was terrified when I had mine too. It was almost identical circumstances to yours and the procedure was almost exactly as you described it too. Only thing different for me was I bleed for about 3 weeks, and was sent home as soon as I could stand and we found out at 10 weeks and had the D&C at 13 weeks. It's no where near as bad as our minds make it out to be. Honestly the preop appointment the day before was worse than the actual surgery in my opinion. The emotional toll is another story all together though. I hope you find a way to manage the emotional toll that's right for you. If you need to talk, you can come to me. I've been through it twice.

I've come to terms with it and since had a beautiful baby boy. Thank you for your support and sharing your experience as well. I'm glad that you had a similar, uneventful story.

Thank you Kyrie ♥ I have to be honest though, I didn't think much of putting it out there. I just want others to have somewhere to see what to expect.

I just underwent my first D&C yesterday and needless to say I was terrified.

My husband and I lost our third son at 16w5d gestation almost 3 weeks ago. My doctor took the wait and see approach to see if I'd miscarry on my own or if I'd need something to help me miscarry.

I finally miscarried at home yesterday morning but had to go to the hospital because the placenta was retained and I was bleeding rather heavily. I knew they would do a D&C but asked if they could give me a local instead of knocking me out. My doctor explained he had to knock me out but reassured me that everything would be fine.

They gave me the medicine to relax me than gave me the drugs to knock me out. The last thing I remember was being placed on the operating table. After that I was out. The next thing I remember was waking up in recovery. After that, I felt so stupid for being so scared.

Thanks for posting this thread. It's nice to share with other women who've been there and understand what you're been through!

You're welcome. I really want other women that have gone through or have to go through this experience to be able to relate to each other, vent it out, or come for advice.
Thank you for sharing your experience and I'm sorry you had to endure it

Than you so much for this!!!! I am going to my doctor on Saturday and will most likely be scheduling a D&C and I've been completely terrified! I found out last weekend at 10 weeks that my baby dies around 6 weeks. My doc is taking the wait & see approach too but nothing is happening and I want this whole experience to be done so I can start healing.
This post makes me relax so much more about the whole process. Thanks again
