Need help with jogging stroller- all terrain vs running

posted 18th Sep '05
Hi- we are trying to decide on a jogging stroller- the all terrain like the BOB SUS delux looks good BUT we are not sure if this would work well for rollerblading (not fast speeds) or moderate jogging. The offroad boviously works well. Can anyone comment on other models to consider or recommendations? By looking at these wheels verus others like ironman, they are quite different.
Thank you very much, Lisa

Sorry about the delay in response, but I have been out of the country and off the internet for the past couple of weeks off and on. (And somehow your post slipped through the cracks).

If it's any help at this point, I would actually prefer to specifically recommend you talk to the online help at joggingstroller.com. regarding how well rollerblading would go with any given jogging stroller.

In general, I think any of the strollers that are expressly designed for joggers should be just fine for rollerblading behind, but as I have absolutely no knowledge of problems with parents that rollerblade with strollers, I'm not going to make that a final statement. Also, anything from BOB, Dreamer, BabyJogger, and Kelty that are designed for runners (think 16'' tire minimum) should be fine for these sorts of activities.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

THANK YOU! SO glad yo get a great reply- I got an email lettingme know you replied. My husband's final question is should it be a pivoting or fixed wheel? He's conncerned that the fixed wheel will not take turns (and I mean outside, NOT in the mall- this will not be a mall stroller) easily.

And one more from me- the BOB SUS has the 16"+ wheels in both a heavy duty type of wheel (like an SUV- thicker) and then the thinner (think like a road bike- that goes faster).. does it matter at all for light jogging?

Thanks and sorry for bombarding with questions! I;m full term today Smile))

My initial sense for the fixed vs. pivot wheel is that if you'll probably be safest with a stroller that tracks straighter when you're roller blading-- which would be a fixed wheel. Turning a jogger with a fixed wheel is definitely more difficult and takes a bit of learning curve: you have to pop a bit of a wheely while pressing down on the handle in the direction you want to turn in. All in all, the fixed wheel stroller can turn--it's just not as easy to turn, and the tighter the corner, the more muscle you have to put into it.

But if you live in an area where you're going to be rollerblading slowly and making lots of turns, you might do well to purchase a stroller that has the front pivot wheel (such as the Dreamer Manhattan) with a locking mechanism for those straight stretches.

For some reason, I'm imagining rollerblading down the Santa Monica beach board walk-- which is a nice straight stretch. It largely depends on the speed you travel at. Nice and casual roller blading can probably handle a pivot wheel and thus enjoy the increased maneuverability on corners-- but at higher speeds there's less room for error and less control, so it's more important to not be tracking to the side slightly at high speeds (which there is an increased probability of happening with a pivot wheel) as that's just a recipe for disaster.

Do you really need to be rollerblading and pushing your baby? How fast will you be going? How fast can you stop? How fast can someone else stop in case they dont see you? Is it really worth risking your baby & your safety so you can rollerblade? What about jogging or walking?

Did you know that mums out there are just about getting the baby bath seat banned because of safety issues. Apparently the warning label on the box, on the bath seat, in the manual saying NEVER LEAVE YOUR CHILD UNATTENDED is not clear enough so mums go and answer the phone and do a bunch of other stuff whilst their baby is left near water. NEVER is apparently not clear enough and mums are winning lawsuits against manufacturers. Will we read lawsuits from mums who have hurt themselves and their babies when they werent able to hold onto the stroller after falling wearing rollerblades?

Sure it may be safe enough one time to rollerblade but what about the time when it isnt safe. Who will be held responsible for the death of your baby, yourself, or another innocent bystander. A elderly man was recently knocked over by accident whilst walking on the street. He died. His family and the general public feel that the person who knocked him over should be held for manslaughter.

Is it really worth all the risk?
