depression at 3?

posted 2nd Mar
Ok i am a mother of three, my oldest is 3 and i had my son a month ago. Lately shes been looking likes shes the saddest child in the world. I give her and my second so much attention that they should be happy but my oldest just looks sad all the time and she'll look at me and she makes me want to cry to see her that way.

Is it possible my child is suffering from some form of depression?

its so hard to say. I pray not. Most peds docs have a child psychiatrist, i would definately make her an appt. It doesnt hurt to just go let someone look at her.

I would take her to see the ped if she doesn't improve soon. Just be careful, because a lot times, they'll just offer medication and that doesn't really fix the problem in the long run. Make sure you spend time just with her. Let her choose what to do if possible. And ask her about her feelings. Help her articulate what she's feeling. She may not understand how she is feeling and then it won't get better. Good luck!

I second this. You can play games with her that are about feelings without directly asking her. If she's acting out what her doll is doing with her little sister or with her mommy that'll be easier for her to put into words. See if she wants to help out more too? She may just not know what her role is anymore. keep us posted

Does she eat a healthy diet and get plenty of fresh air, sunshine and exercise? If she's lacking a little in one of these areas, maybe you could try adjusting a little and seeing if that helps.
Oh, and cod liver oil is supposed to work wonders for children's emotional health. You can find it at health food stores. I use it and I've noticed a big change in my 4 year old, who has a tendency to be very moody and intense.
