Official Independent Adoptions Thread

posted 19th Jul '11
If anyone has information to add please let me know! I will be updating the OP as I obtain information.

Independent Adoptions are Private Adoptions. Private (or independent) adoptions are done through adoption attorneys, and may or may not involve an adoption opportunity that is located and arranged by the attorney.

First you find a adoption agency and get in the pool.

I haven't heard of the term pooling (doesn't mean it doesn't exist, I'm just not familiar with it)

This is where I saw it.

The wait with a private child adoption agency placement can depend on whether the agency uses a fixed waiting list or a pooling program. An agency using a fixed waiting list may be able to give you a good idea of the wait while a pooling program, which allows the birth parents to select a family from a pool of families, can only give you an estimate based on averages. In general, waiting periods for a fixed list and a pooling program can vary from about 4-6 months up to several years.

I am not sure.

Hm.. That doesnt sound like a private adoption to me. I might be wrong though. I'm no expert. Based on this, the term pooling is where you're on a wait list for parents to pick you from and the fixed list is where they place you with a child.

I always understood private adoptions to be adoptions that do not involve an angency of any kind. A "private" agency does not make it a private adoption. A private adoption is basically an adoption that takes place between the birth mom and possibly dad and the adoptive parent(s). They are aided only by an attorney, to make it legal. There are attorneys that specialize in this and some even help to arrange the adoptions. Often, the adoptive parents and biological parents find each other. I have been interested in private adoptions for years, and the above info is what I have always been told.

Some Attorneys create client pools so if a birthmom comes to them they have some options.

My husband and I have had our sad share of the ttc blues as well...so we have been thinking of adoption for some time now, but paper work and trying to find a birthmom is always harder here in Canada. Anyway, I posted an ad and withing about a month this man contacted me saying his lil sister had not long found out she's expecting, she told the BF and he up an walked away telling her to abort. I thought it was odd, anyway I didn't hound them or anything...but we did chat. I told her a bit about my family and my intentions of what I love to offer for her-my baby, and she said we would be perfect for him - her. She is only 10 weeks about, and she is trying very hard not to get attached. I do want her to be there, and have visit's and photos. We will be just going through a lawyer, we both live in the same city, which is a bonus. I personally have not got to excited just yet, seems to good to be true. She had e-mailed me a last week asking me if I would go to the ultrasound with her, and then she was asking if I had names picked out. Well, just wanted to talk to someone about this, baby is not due till Dec.16. I am praying so hard EVERY day this works out and we have a new baby by then. Please pray hard this lil baby arrives healthy and meant for us....<3 Hugs girls.
