About to have preemies!!! Looking for ADVICE & SUPPORT

posted 27th Feb
I am in the hospital playing the waiting game. Giving them all the blood the vampires want and doing as many urine analysis' as they want. I am not gripping just saying..I managed through that. Now it seems like the preeclampsyia(s) is pushing the date closer and closer. At noon the specialist said looks like this weekend and now he came in and told me no food or drink after midnight. I am 31wks 5 days with twins that weigh 3lb 12oz and 3lb 6oz. I got the steriod shots for their lungs, so he in not real concerned about that..but now I don't know what else to expect at this age. Anyone have any advice or experience? I would love to hear it. Thanks BG girls ya'll have been the BEST

Sounds like they both have good weights! A friend of our family recently delivered triplets with the smallest weighing almost 3 pounds and the bigger two in the 3-4 lb range (I dont remember exactly). They were home from the NICU pretty quickly - I want to say within 2 weeks, and all are doing well.

Good luck to you and your babies!

Wow..I can handle a short stay I just keep reading these horror tales and it is really making me nervous. I was going to go on a NICU tour tomorrow but it doesn't look like I am even going to be able to get that in. Thank yall for all the positive thoughts..they really help. I am a first time mom so you can imagine twins would be a handful but now preemie twins are really scaring me!

Wow, twins! I've never had 2 preemies at the same time, but I do have 2 preemies! No one wants their babies to come early, but if they have to, you are in a very good place! 32 weeks is a great milestone for fetal development and the steroid shots are like miracle workers. I can say all this and I didn't get either! My babies were born at 28 weeks and 30 weeks. They are both doing wonderfully. The NICU is called a rollercoaster for a reason, but it sounds like you will escape most of its heart ache. Just remember that they are your babies. Make sure that NICU staff include you in their care and let YOU make decisions for them. I think that the staff get a little too into their routine and forget that preemie babies are a new experience for most parents. Best of luck to you! Hi, ive been in ur shoes. I had contractions and pre eclampsia from early in my pregnancy and delivered my twins 3 months early. As for advice, id say try to get them bedding together as soon as you can, also try and kangaroo with them at the same time. You may have to push for this in nicu, but its well worth it for the sake of the babies and for you.

Delivering at 32 weeks with them being 3.5-4lbs, id guess they will maybe be on cpap (a lil mask to help them breathe) for a day or so but nothing major. Prepare yourself for them having a few monitors and tubes, it is scary but it ensures they are always safe and sound! At that weight they have passed all the major probs and hopefully they will be home within 4 weeks or so. During that time, take it easy on yourself, spend all the time you can with them and dont beat urself up for the times you cant. Also id encourage you to express breastmilk until they are able to feed by mouth, it should only be for 2 weeks as they are normally fine b/f by 34wks, and it really is worth it.

Goodluck hun, i hope it goes well x

Everyone's advice is just what I need. I just took a tour of the NICU and just going in there is overwhelming. I am sure it is way more emotional when you are actually going in to see your babies. There weren't any babies there that were at the same age mine are or even same weight, but all the mothers that were in there said wonderful things about the staff. I just keep hoping I can keep them in the oven a couple more days! Thanks for sharing personal experiences..that is really helping me alot!

i volunteered in a NICU. everything will seem scary at first for you. dont be afraid to ask questions!! if you are concerned about anything just ask.. in the nicu i was in, twins were put in the same bed when they no longer needed the warmers. just remember that progress is progress no matter how small

I had my twins at 28 weeks from emergency csection and it was by far the scariest thing I have ever been through. It is goo that you have gotten the staroid shot. I didn't have time to get it and my twins did really well. One was on the vent for 3 days and the other was on for 2 and then they just had to be on oxygen for a while. It sounds like the docs are on top of things too wich is good. I am sure you and the babies will do great.
One thing that I feel really helped my boys go home earlier than planned is that I was able to be there everyday for the feedings and to change them and what not. I don't know if that is an option for you but I hope that it is. If you ever need to talk or have questoins just PM me and I will be more than willing to help with what I can. My mom is also a NICU manager and has been working in the NICU for over 16 years. Let me know if you need anything.
