Babies born at 34 weeks?

posted 27th Feb '08
Ok so long story short --- I went in for my bi-weekly visit today and my
blood pressure is still semi-high (has beenhigh on and off the last few weeks)dialation is still close to 2 and suprise --- Im having contractions (dialation and contractions started about a month ago) and starting to swell - on top of that they ran a culture because of a discharge issue *sorry TMI* and I have a rare infection - which they said wasnt yeast but something else ---- prescribed me a $180 script and no more work and questioned me as to why at my last visit I had gained 12 pounds and two weeks later at this visit Ive lost 10.

Anyways --- their way of trying to reassure me was "If she comes now she'll survive and just need some extra NICU time --- and that IF she decides to come now - because Im 34 weeks --- they wont try and stop labor except for long enough to get to the OR --- apparently because right now it may be safer for her to be outside than close to the infection if it continues.....

So - no more work --- increase water intake --- continue taking the Zofran for the nausea and "take it easy - feet up"

Im considered "high risk" because of preterm labor and pregnancy complications with my son years ago - and am scheduled to have a C-section in week 39.

My question --- Has anyone else had their babies at 34 weeks --- How scared should I be? Right now Im terrified and I know this isnt helping things......

My cousin had her baby at 34 weeks and my best friend had hers at 35 weeks. Both had to do their time in the NICU, but both are healthy and happy. Your baby will be, too. Hang in there and good luck!

to be honest, I wouldn't worry. a friend of mine had her baby at 35 weeks and she was perfectl healthy and got to come home right away. So even if you're baby has to be in the NICU for a while, it probably won't be for too long at all, given that she is born with no complications on her end. Just try to relax and not to worry too much. Your baby is very well developed at this point and I am sure it'll all turn out ok if she is born within the week.

my dr. told me the same thing at my last appt. she said they won't stop contractions from now on because they'll be just fine if born now. no need to worry, the most they may need is some extra help breathing. extra NICU time isnt always necessary.

My doctor gave birth yesterday at 35 weeks. Her baby is almost 6lbs. HE IS SO ADORABLE! He is doing great wasn't on a respirator or anything. Everyone was passing him around like any other birth lol. He looks great!

Also, when women carry twins it is actually normal to induce at 36 weeks because the full term for twins is shorter. So pretty close to there I'd say it's probably fine.

I was born at 35 weeks and the only problem I had was I needed some oxygen for 2 days and stayed in the NICU for a week because they wanted to make sure I was gaining weight well. Of course it's been a quite a few years since then. I haven't had any health problems throughout my life other then normal childhood illnesses like the chicken pox and such.

Hi! I am here to offer you good words of hope! I am pregnant with my second child, I am 42 and I too am considered high risk- due to age and pre-eclamsia that developed with my first child.....My ob is planning on scheduling a C-Section in week 36 for me ( That is considered a full term pregnancy)..I had my 1st child at 28 weeks...He weighed less than 2 lbs and spent 38 day in the NICU...He was breathing on his own after an hour..he only stayed in the NICU so that he could be large enough to safely take home...The good news: He is now almost 6 years old and perfect. We had no additional complications other than him being early...This isn't what I would wish for anyone, but I can tell you the end result of all of this is a perfect son. .. So good luck and know that it will be fine....Everything is developed at 34 weeks and our experience with the NICU staff was amazing

A friend of mine had her baby girl at 31 almost 32 weeks and she had to spend about a month in the NICU, but she was the healthiest baby there for her age. She was so strong that she only had to be helped with her breathing for like a day! So, as long as you have taken good care of youself and given your baby the necessary vitmins and what I would say that you are pretty safe.
It's scary to think about having them this early, but have faith that they are in good hands and that everything will be fine.
Have they given you any shots of steroids to help mature the lungs? I would think that they might have done this just to be on the safe side, and if not you might just mention it to your Dr....

How much did she weigh? I've already had my labor stopped once and they gave me steroids for her lungs, I'm just concerned about her weight now cause I'm still having contractions on the meds they gave me. I'll be 34 weeks tomorrow.
