Oh I'm not stopping anytime soon... I just think it's absurd for people to think that just because a child has teeth they can no longer breastfeed.

Some babies are born with teeth? So should they never be given the change to breastfeed?

No but his teeth are sharp... and there are ways to teach your child not to bite. He has only bitten me 5 times and it hurts like hell. But that is no reason to stop doing it.

Let me quote myself, "I just think it's absurd for people to think that just because a child has teeth they can no longer breastfeed."

Did I specify an age in that statement??? I didn't think so.

It is the mothers choice on how long to continue breastfeeding, some people choose to let the child self-wean. It is Recommended by the AAP to breastfeed for 2 years now.

I does bite my breasts... but we are working on that. There are methods to stop your child from biting.

well, there is no specific universl "stopping age" for breastfed babies. it's what works best for that individual child and mother. if breastfeeding your baby/toddler grosses you out after 12 months of age, then i would say that's a good stopping point for you.   i do believe that most babies/children let their mothers know when they are ready to wean from the breast. my son did. i would have loved to continue to BF, but he had other plans! lol

I was trying to find out how long either of the great apes nurse their infants, and I came across this somehow, I don't know if its true, but I thought it was a neat story.

Quoting River's Mum:“ Well, how long is too long? I remember seeing a commercial once where a guy brought his girlfriend home ... [snip!] ... girlfriend home to meet mum and mum started breastfeeding him right there. I was soooo revolted. When is a good stopping point?”

When the child decides to self wean.

As the article states, most children will stop by themselves by the age of seven.

I stuck with it for a month after my daughter got her teeth and I kept trying all the tricks to get her to stop biting but after ending up with 2 bloody and extremely sore nipples I just called it quits. If you think that makes me a bad mom than so be it, but I kept it up as long as I physically could. I would recommend to any mom to keep breastfeeding as long as possible but you're not a failure if you can't.

And if YOU could read, you would have realized that this wasn't posted for people to make closed-minded remarks. It was posted to show the benefits of breastfeeding and extended breastfeeding.
