Feeding/sleeping questions

posted 26th Feb
My son is a preemie that was born at 30 weeks. He's now 11 1/2 weeks old and 8 lbs 5 oz. He eats about 3 oz every 3-4 hours. Is this normal? He's gaining weight very well. He will sleep 2 4 to 4 1/2 hour stretches at night. Should he be sleeping longer by now? What about eating more? Adjusted age he would only be 2 weeks but he seems so much farther along than that.....any help?

He's on Similac 22 calorie neosure. But I'm asking his doctor about changing it.

My son was born at 32 weeks and is on the Neosure. He will be six months old friday. When he was about your sons age I started to give him cereal in his bottle once a day. Just to see if he could tolarate it. And he did. I only put a little in it but it has progressed to him sleeping all night and having a better weight gain. He went to the Dr on Monday and he weighs 15 lb. I would not ask the dr to change the formula unless he is having a lot of spit up from it. He needs all the calories that he can get right now.

he's having really bad reflux and i'm not sure if the formula is the culprit. He spits up all the time but I don't know if it's formula related or if it's just a general problem.

They do make a lsomill formula that is a high calorie formula also. I got a coupon for it the other day when I got my formula. It must be newbecausethe coupon was buy one get one free. ??? It has been 13 years before I had my preemie so I am not sure what is new or old anymore.

Does he take any medicine for the reflux? A friend of mine had a baby about the same time as me and her son is on some medicine for it. He was losing weight instead of gaining.

He's gaining weight quite well but I'd still like for him to have high calorie. I haven't heard of it. I will check it out and ask my doctor. He's taking reglan and zantac. But the reglan makes him VERY hyper

My first preemie was on high calorie until 6 months, but my son got the ok to exclusively breastfeed at 8 weeks, (so no high cal formula). I think it just depends on the baby. I got Ethan's weight checked a week after he stopped the high cal formula and he was still gaining an ounce a day. My daughter was genetically destined to be thin though. My son has genes from my side of the family and is a chunker   Ethan has been off the high cal for 3 weeks now and weighs 9 pounds even, so he's still gaining weight well. But like I said, I kept my first on the high cal til 6 months. It's nice to know they are getting that little extra, it makes for good peace of mind. What is Hayden's sleep schedule like? Ethan is going to make me crazy if he doesn't get his sleep regulated during the day!

he sleeps like 4-5 hours at a time about 2x a day and then he's awake about 2 hours at a time. Then at night it just depends.

My daughter is about 18 months and just hit the 20 lb mark. When she was born she was about a month early. She had had really bad acid reflux but they dubed her a "happy spitter" because she would spit up all of her bottle and smile. We went through about 10 different formulas, we tried changing the brands the different kinds everything, evenadding cereal and nothing worked. Someone had told me about Nutramagen (check spelling) we tried it and it was miracle worker. Its a hypoallergenic so it has no perservatives in it. I later found out my daughter has a low tolerance to milk, she is now able to drink milk but for some odd reason she can only keep down organic milk. A little help for the sleeping I started this when she was about 4 monthsI would give her a bath and then give her a massage and after that feed her a 4 oz bottle of formula with about a tsp of rice cereal in it. Hopefully this helps.
