gagging..

Makayla is 2 weeks old today and after she eats I sit her up for a good 45 minutes but as soon as I lay her down.. she starts to gag. So I suck out her nose but nothing comes out. She sounds congested and her doctor said it's all in her nose. Does anyone else baby gag like this??

Does she sound like her chest is congested? Do a search on "stridor in babies". Its a malfunction of the flap in the esophagus, and causes them to sound congested...gag...spit up...reflux...make weird high pitched noises when they breath. Its a very common occurance in babies...and very often overlooked. My son has it. Its not a serious condition...they usually grow out ot it by time they're a year old. Also, when they breathe in, you can see a very signifigant "sink spot" in the middle of their chest. Like I said...its not anything serious, and its very common. But, you need to know if your child has it or not because there are precautions you need to take. My son does the same thing but the doctor said it was RAD. Restricted Airway Disease.

He just gets congested all the time and he has to take albuterol sp? but otehr than that he is ok. He actually started gagging when he was about 2 months. When I took him to the ER the dr. said that the noise and congestion comes from them not letting the snot come out of their nose they inhale it back in and the boogers dry and that is what the gagging and noise comes from. RAD is just another way for them to say they dont know if he has asthma or if it is brought on by something else.

You can get the nasal saline drops and pump her nose that will help her and give her pedicare that should help but ask her dr just to be sure.

They're probably very similar. With stridor, the flap that covers the airway that is supposed to protect it from fluids/food...is supposed to "hover" over the opening. With stridor..the flap is "lazy" and just sits there...in turn causing all the congested noises and all the other symptoms. I never heard RAD during his complete testing and dx process. He had every one of the stridor symptoms, so I was satisfied with that dx. Hope everything is going well with your little one.
