What do I need for my newborn while at the hospital?

posted 25th Feb
I've got about 2 weeks to go and I'm going nuts about what to put in her diaper bag! I have packed and unpacked, and repacked it about 10 times already! So what do most hosptials provide you with during your stay? I know she needs clothes and gowns but what else?

All I needed was the going home outfit and the car seat. Diapers, wipes, bottles (if needed), pacis (if needed), Formula (if needed), clothes and blankets are all provided.

I brought diapers and Im glad i did, sunce they only provided size one diapers and they were just too big on my son. Also, I'd bring wipes, just in case they have those crappy ones that you have to put water on to use. In my diaper bag was a going home outfit, diapers, wipes, a bottle (which i didn't need) a binkie (which I also didn't need) and...I think that was it...

But make sure to pack a bag for you too. In mine I had a few pairs of socks and underwear, a loose, comfy outfit to go home in and my toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush etc. Dont forget a camera too!

carseat, a couple outfits of your own for the baby (I hate the hospital shirts they give the babies), wipes (I had no idea some hospitals did not supply them until I had my daughter), comfortable clothes for you, a blanket for you as hospital rooms are freezing freaking cold, a blanket for baby b/c the rooms are cold and the hospital only gives them a receiving blanket, shampoo, soap, towel (unless you want to dry with a hand towel), wash cloth, toothpaste, change for vending machines, camera. You probably dont need to worry about make up and such b/c trust me...you will not feel like puttin git on

Hey! I live in Johnson City, TN! I delivered at Sycamore Hospital in Elizabethon with my son. They did provide quite a bit, but since I didn't know that I had a full set diaper bag. I recommend just filling your diaper bag with things that the baby will need day-to-day as well as maybe a gown, NB long-sleeved onesie (I kept one in the diaper usually anyway), a picture/coming-home outfit. Oh and socks. Although, I kept those in the diaper at all times too. Hm? What else? I know I am forgetting something!!!

Duh! Blankets! I brought a receiving blanket (which I also kept in the bag), and two other blankets. One to cover him in and one to cover on the carrier.

I know that there is still something else........

Good idea! I didn't think of a blanket for myself.

The things I used while at the hospital that I brought was my camera(obviously!)
For myself-going home clothes
-my own nighty (next time I will bring 2 at least because I ended up staying longer from having a emergency c-section)but if your OK with being in their gowns then you don't even need that..
-slippers
-socks
-pair of undies (to go home in)
-hygene products(toothbrush/paste, soap, brush, deo., etc.)
-hair elastics
-lip balm

Baby
-sleeper (Hubby didn't think I would need it but my daughter loved that little extra warmth)
-Blanket(mainly to go home with incase it is colder out)
-Going home outfit(including one onesie because my hospital kept all the clothes they supplied except the hats and baby hygene stuff(wipes, diapers, etc.))
-snowsuit(if needed)
-carseat

Yeah, I froze when I had my son b/c hospital blankets are thin. I packed one when I had my daughter and I was comfortable...as I could get being in a hospital. I still froze but not as bad

HaHaHa, thats funny I came home with one of the burp clothes too.
I went to a small hospital nearby my home and they were great about everything... I ended up spending 4 days due to a c-section(I stay an extra day because they said they would take my staples out before I left if I did) and if I needed anything-extra pillows, towels, blankets they brought it and I was very comfortable the whole time- I still was SUPER glad to get home though...I was even allowed to have people in my room at any time and hubby stayed the whole time with me 24/7. What was really great was the fact that they just didnt have a little cot- they had a futon so after the 1st night I was sleeping on the futon with him and didn't even use the hospital bed LOL

I packed two outfits (one in newborn and one 0-3 months, not sure how big/little the baby was going to be), onies, a few pair of socks , a few pair of mittens, comb/brush, binki, baby lotion/powder/oil , blanket, carseat w/seat fleece (or whatever it's called). The hospital providedwipes, diapers, receiving blankets, t-shirts,formula. One thing I found is just great is a carseat fleece, like http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2266848. I swear this item is a Godsent.

while diapers and wipes are usually supplied everyone I've visited in the hospital said they wished they'd brought their own because most hospitals only have size 1's and they're usually too big and you have to fold them down to make room for the umbilical cord... My husband and I are bringing our own, the ones with the little cut out for the cord...

Take wipes just in case. I thought all hospitals had them. When I had my son at Hendersonville they had everything and newborn diapers. When I had my daughter at Horizon they told me I would have to wipe her with a washcloth!
