please help me understand this ......

My son has been having problems having bms on his own for some reason. He is 7weeks old and for almost the last three weeks, he hasnt had one on his own until yesterday. Ive taken him to the pedi. twice about it in the time that its been a problem and he says that Nathan's not constipated that hes perfectly fine. Two Thursdays ago we gave him an infant supository and then last Wed. the doctor gave him a rectal exam and he had a small bm. We started giving him pear juice and it didnt do anything so we gave him some prune juice on Sat. Im thinking thats what got him to finally have a bm on his own yesterday. Even though I told the pedi. that I could tell that Nathan is uncomfortable and in pain he said that its from something else that whats happening is that since he's breastfeeding that his bowels and soft and its not stimulating his rectum. (We asked him if it was normal with breastfeeding babies and he said no, not at all .... so yea, that didnt make any sense to us at all.) He said that as long as Nathan has a bm atleast once a week that he'll be alright. Now Ive always heard that babies are supposed to have multiple bms a day. Nathan was going from atleast 8a day to absolutely nothing a day. I have been so fusterated and upset about this, its not even funny. I know that its not normal. Have any of you have simular things said to you or is my pedi a complete moron like I think he is. Please, any input or advise would be great as to if it is normal or what I should do. Any ideas as to what could be wrong with him??? Thanks so much.

I don't know whats wrong with him, but you could try this:
Take a wash cloth and run warm water over it and rub it on his bottom, try and stimulate him. Maybe that will help him poo.

If you're exclusively breastfeeding it's COMPLETELY normal for a baby not to have a bm for up to two weeks! Breastmilk is so pure they digest it very well, so it's not that uncommon. Your doctor doesn't sound like he knows much about breastfed babies poops

That doesn't sound right to me. If your baby is breastfed, he should have an easier time pooping, not harder, as the colostrum stimulates the bowels to get them working, and the actual milk is easier to digest for them than formula. I'd get a second opinion at a different pediatrician.

weird! I just know the hospital kept on reminding me to make sure he had so many poopy diapers a day and so many wet diapers a day, and they knew I was breastfeeding. Also, they did a call back today and asked me again.

yep, right at 2 months my baby instantly started going weekly. Sometimes even longer than a week. As long as when is happens it is liquidy (ew) and not solid, and his tummy doesn't feel really firm, it should be pretty normal... after a couple weeks my baby started going 1-2 times a day again :/ and now he goes every 2 to 3 days...? it's weird!

Well, her baby is a little older than yours. At first they make sure they're going so often to get the meconium out. But at about 4-6 weeks they're able to digest breastmilk better and it's OK for them to go longer between bm's.

Always listen to your mother's instinct, if you feel like your doctor is wrong and not helping go to another pedi and get a second opinion. A friend of mine was taking her son in for coughing/ chest cold that kept getting worse and her pedi kept telling her her baby was fine and normal. Her instinct told her he was wrong and she took him to another pedi and that pedi caught that he had whooping cough and her baby was at the edge of being hospitalized with it. I think get a second opinion. I hope all is well, and God bless!!!
