ABNORMAL UMBILICAL CORD HELP!!

posted 23rd Feb
I went to go and get my 5 month ultrasound yesterday and everything was fine. Her bones and spine are fine.her nose bone is shaped well. so she has no characteristics of an abnormal baby. my blood tests for downsyndrome also came back normal. But the only thing was that she has a one vein ,one artery umblical cord when she is supposed to have 2 arteries.
My doctor said she has seen many cases of this.and many babies have turned out fine. but it just means my baby has a .5 percent chance of having down syndrome. She gave me a choice of having amniocentisis done. but ive heard bad things about it.

HAS ANYONE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM OR CAN THEY PLEASE GIVE ME SOME HELP.IM DYING HERE.
THANK YOU

What would change if you had the amnio?

That's a tough choice, my doctor told me that aminos are alot safer now, but it's all up to you. My mom had one done and my brother is perfectly healthy. I guess the main question you need to ask yourself is will the results change anything? I hope that you figure everything out.

it isn't going to change anything if you get the amnio other than being prepared for your baby if the baby has ds. also, it gives you peace of mind.

I am actually glad that we didn't find out until he was born because we weren't thinking about worst case scenarios and focusing on the fact that our son has ds, but rather what should always be focused on, the birth of a new baby.

I had an amnio 18 yrs ago because they said my daughter had downs syndrome. Its a very delicate procedure...and its very important to stay off your feet and stay in bed for 48 hrs. I did that...and everything went fine. I had no complications whatsoever. Turns out, the test was wrong, and she was completely fine at birth.

Like the previous poster said...what would change if you got the amnio? If you're still going to have the baby...why stress about it the rest of your pregnancy? Trust me...if I could go back, I would have chosen not to have it done...it wouldnt have made a difference if she had it or not...she was my baby and I was keeping her no matter what life brought us. When I was pregnant for my son last year...they asked me if I wanted to take that test again to see about downs syndrome or spinabifida...I declined. They were shocked...but I dont care. It wouldnt have made a difference...so why stress about a test that isnt 100% accurate? The choice is up to you...amnios are very safe now...if you choose to do it for peace of mind, i totally understand. i'm sure everything will be fine with your baby...and good luck with everything. i will pray for you. take care hon.

thats a wonderful question! answer that...and it will lead you to the answer weather or not to get the amnio!

if youre not gonna abort/end the pregnancy if the amnio were to come back bad news...then theres no reason to get it done!

My son also had a two vessel cord. They found out at my 16 week ultra sound. The doctor I was seeing called in a specialist from Oregon and he redid my ultra sound confirming it and all he said it meant was that they have to closely watch the baby to make sure that he gets all the nutrients that he should be getting. He also said that he would be born small cause his umbilical cord had to adjust. He said it was perfectly fine and my baby should be ok. He was born six weeks early and only 4 lbs but he did wonderful. They just gave me an ultrasound like every 4 weeks to measure him and make sure he was growing properly. He was always measuring 2 weeks ahead of schedule.

Personally I'd get the amnio. But, that's only because I would terminate a DS diagnoesed pregnancy. IF This is not something you would do and it doesn't matter to you that your baby has DS then, I would not risk the procedure.

best of luck!!!!

not to start drama but, I grew up with special needs kids and from my experience it's just cruel to make a child suffer with any sort of abnormality. When dealing with chromosomal(sp, sorry it's early) abnormalities you have no idea what kind of surgeries etc they will need. I would hate to put any one through that just because I decided they should be brought into the world. I'm not judging other people who do make that choice, I just personally could not do it and feel like I was doing the right thing for my child.

I'm speaking specifically about DS when I say this, but they can live very rich and full lives, even if they have to have open heart surgery (just an example of one of the surgeries.) They have a very long list of people willing to adopt a child with special needs. I personally think it's wrong to abort a baby because they are going to have a choromsomal disorder. Ibelieve that God hasput them in our care for a reason, and if we feel that we cannot take care of them, there aretons of people out there who can and will. I grew up around a lot of special needs children/adults too(and have a 7 1/2 month old son with DS), and I have never in my entire life met a happier person. Just because they won't be able to experience everything that we can doesn't mean that we should decide for them that their life isn't worth living. I am not saying you are a bad person at all, because that is your choice to make, so please don't think I am attacking you, I just like to debate about this. It is something I am very passinate about and always have been.

I am going through the same thing right now and i feel the exact same way that you do! The ultrasound that they did showed everything about my baby to be normal but thy wanted me to get this level 2 ulteasound done to "recheck" everything. I know that if my son is born with problems I'd love him just the same but getting a amnio is juat a way to prepare and calm you fears... if they find anything wrong when i go i think i might get an amnio just to prepare myself and my family and ease my mind...I go in a week to see if everything is ok. Its just been really tough for me to wait one week to know if the baby is ok!
I dont know if you were like me and went on the internet to find out more but i regret it... i found nothing but neg. things...But my Dr. assured me that if nothing else is wrong...that if the first ultrasound is good that everything will be just fine!!! Im praying for you and hope everything goes well!

omg! I intentionally searched a topic on umbilical cord to see if anyone had a 2 vessel umbilical cord. I am going through the same thing. Everything came back normal and the baby seems to be growing fine but I tend to worry about it. I 'm just having faith in the lord. The doctors and genetic counselor told me everything leans to the positve side and that there have been cases like mine where the baby is perfectly normal. I chose not to do the amnio because I already heard her heartbeat and felt her move by the time they offered it to me and I was not willing to abort. Whatever god gave me, I accept and who are we to take an innocent life. Don't worry and have faith. Enjoy your pregnancy and don't stress about it. Look at all the positive things going on.
