Melatonin During Pregnancy

posted 25th Jun '11
So, I have butchered my sleep schedule, and I cannot fall asleep for the life of me at a decent hour most nights.
Is it safe to take melatonin during pregnancy? And how much?
I asked my OB today and she freaken answered "yea it's fine" as she was walking out the door. (I am switching my OB today. I dgaf if my husband thinks her lack of personality matters. I want my questions answered.)
Anyway... I bought some, but now that I'm looking online I am seeing not-so-positive results. I was wondering if anyone can give any input on this?

Idk if it is but I know moms have used unisom and tylenol pm I believe.

Oh & that would piss me off to no end, I can not stand when doctors do that crap.

It's naturally present in your body, so as long as your taking a small dose just once in a while, should be just fine.

I've heard you aren't supposed to, but two doctors I've seen as well as an advice nurse gave me the okay to use Tylenol PM or Benadryl.

I don't know but would love to know what answers you get. I am freaked out cause I was taking ambian in my first trimester a few times. I also was taking melatonin I stopped when I found out I was pregnant but I sure miss a good night sleep. I don't feel right about taking anything though because I just feel like I am giving it to my baby.

The bottle I had said NOT to take it during pregnancy, so I didn't.

Yea, she also said Tylenol PM is okay (she did manage to fit that in before she walked off lol) but I can't take benedryl, I'm allergic

I wasn't planning on too much. Starting with 1mg... Ugh. I wish she would have stayed and talked to me. My head hurts and I want to sleep

I'm sure you will be fine   Usually the avoiding stuff is precautionary... Lots of things happen during pregnancy, our babies are resilient

That sucks. I've noticed that a lot of OBs are like that, too. That's why I switched to a midwife. I'm never seeing an OB during a pregnancy again lol

Maybe go for Tylenol PM for a night or two to get your sleep schedule on?

Mine doesn't even say to consult a doctor lol. The only warning it has is if you are on a sedative and how it's hard to operate machinery.

I think your probably OK for this one night since your Dr did say ok and you are not doing it every night. Tylenol is also very safe. I have to take it often for my back and numerous drs have said its just fine.

Yea, I'm actually planning to switch to a midwife! I'm super excited I found some that will be covered, and the hospital is near where we are moving. I'm not so thrilled about being in a hospital but... It's a compromise, I guess, since my husband wants me in a hospital with an OB lol.

I am allergic to Benedryl

Never heard of Unisom

And yea... When I tried to explain why I didn't like her, he said "why does it matter if she is a good doctor?" ... I don't really know if she's a good doctor or not.

Since it is already present in your body, I'd start by taking the lowest dose you can and go from there. I think I read somewhere not to exceed 3mg. I would be worried about being hooked on it. I take benedryl every night before bed and have for awhile, otherwise I toss and turn. I am a very light sleeper so if I dont take something, I never fall into the deep sleep.
