Yes, I think you're right. Maybe we should have considered a name that couldn't be shortened to avoid the confusion. We tried to come up with a full name (Gabrielle) that she could go by when she's mature but wanted to shorten it to something cute while she's young. Geez, I never dreamed it would be such an issue. I don't know why it bugs me but it does. I guess I'll just continue to call her Elle and introduce her as Elle and hope everyone else catches on. I know that she will probably tryto choose her own nickname when she's older but from experience, it ususally doesn't catch on. My name is Joan Allyson and I when I was in junior high, I wanted to go by Allyson or Ally and it just didn't happen, I was known as Joan to everyone that knew me.

I had a freind named Gabrielle in high school and everyone since she was little called her Brie(her siblings, family membebers, friends), except her parents have always called her Gabrielle. She never seemed confused. I also use to babysit a little girl name Gabrielle and everyone called her Brielle... but if you asked her what her name was... like " Hi, What's your name?" she would always answer "Gabrielle, and I'm 4 years old "... i don't think it will confused her.

Thanks for your response. It's nice to hear of someone who's known a Gabrielle or two. I think that I'm mostly annoyed with the nickname Ellie than I am worried about her confusion. I also really just want my husband to go along with my nickname choice because he chose her full name. I guess I should look on the bright side because so far we haven't heard her referred to as Gabby much, which is what I was really trying to avoid from the beginning.   (No offense to any Gabby's out there, I just really love Elle as her nickname).

I've been calling Averi "Nay Nay" since she was born. Thats been her nickname since. Its cause that how she use to sound when she cried "nnnayyyy naaayyy". It was cute and eventually disappeared but the nickname stuck. She answers to Averi and Nay Nay. I dont think it matters.
Its funny when people think her name is pronounced different cause of the i. Its still Avery...just with an "I" cause i thought it was more femine.

With Christopher it is the same way! When we picked his name we thought we would call him CJ. My Dad goes by RJ and my first two initials are TJ, and my little bro is AJ. But, it just isn't him! Some family members call him CJ and I expect him to decide when he is older what he wants to be called. When my little bro was little he was AJ. Then around age 4 or 5 all of sudden he said "I am AARON not AJ!!" ok...so we have called him Aaron ever since.

I have a short name, Tara, and wished for a name to shorten when I was younger. My husband is Shyler and gets called SKYLER all the time. No name is perfect. And I am not a fan of calling Christopher 'Chris'. Just doesn't seem like him, and like you and Ellie....I don't really like it!

Our best friends call their little boy, Noah, "Who" "Who-da" or "Who-baby" because he used to make that sound all the time and they asked him "who's the baby?!" He is 15 months and knows all those AND Noah. When we had Christopher I really wanted a cute name like that. A few weeks later I realized we were calling him "Booger-Boo". Now he is called Boo by my in-laws because he was born on Halloween. And my husband and I call him 'Booger'. I love it! Only fear I have is that someone will ask his name in a few years and he will say "Booger!"

Ellie is a 'baby' type of name (no offense to those with it)and Elle is one she may use as a women.

CJ's name is Carl Jeffery. His doctor's office and a few other people call him Carl. I call him CJ, Bubba, Ceej (siege), Stinker, Stinky Butt, etc. and he will respond to every single one of them and he's only 4 months old. I think you're just fine.

My names Melissa and I have TONS of nicknames Liss, Lissa, Lissa-lou, Miss, Missy, Pumpkin, Porkchop. The only people that call me by my full name was teachers in school, and hubby's family and his friends. But to my family I am everything but Melissa  and now it makes me feel like a stranger when people don't use my "nicknames".
My daughter's name is Amaya has alot of nicknames already- I personally love calling her Amaya because that's the name we chose. But my stepson and MILcall her mostlyMayas my parents and siblings call her Maya, and my hubby was calling her Amaya until he saw/held her for the 1st time and ever since he has called her Mumas(mum-maze). I have no idea why but I think it's so cute!

Thanks for your response. I suppose Gabrielle will have plenty of nicknames before it's all said and done. It's just that it seems like I'm doing an awful lot of explaining when her name comes up. For instance, the other night, my husband, Elle and I went to visit my husband's friend and his family. They have two young children (maybe 5 and 7) and they asked what Elle's name was. Well their mom immediately said, "Gabby" and my husband corrected her and said that we call her Elle or Ellie instead of Gabby. Then one of the kids asked, "Okay what is her real name?" Then I said, "It's Gabrielle, but we call her Elle for short". I was pretty annoyed by the time we left, not sure why.

She will know her name. My 3 year old has so many nicknames. Her name is Miranda. Her nicknames are Rannie,Randa, Peanut and she also is called Miranda in spanish and she's had the nick names since she was born. If you ask her her name she will tell you it's Miranda. Lexi's real name is Alexandra. I call her Lex. My husband calls her Lexi. My family calls her baby beans. When you say Lexi which is the name used 70 % of the time she turns around.

It's so hard now! We went to see my husbands grandparents. And they kept calling Christopher 'Chris'. And I kept saying "Christopher...." when refering to him. I didn't want to insult them. Finally his grandpa said "So you call him Christopher?" I smiled and said "Yeah, at least for now."

And when I got his valentines from daycare the bag said "Chris".

I feel dumb getting upset about something small. But, you plan and plan for the perfect name. And they are YOUR baby and want it to be what you want it to be. Atleast while you can still control it! =)

Yes, yes, yes, I totally know where you're coming from. We considered so many names while I was pregnant. We finally ended up with Gabrielle but I think it's because we had to make a decision, I was in labor! In hind sight, there were lovely names we could have chosen but they were either too popular, didn't sound well with our last name, had the the potential of playground teasing, etc. I guess my point is that you strive for a great name and then once they're born, all of a sudden you're dealing with a whole new ballgame-nicknames! I want to establish the nickname I want her to go by and hopefully she'll like it and won't be called anything different. Afterall, when I was young, I actually tried to go by my middle name and it didn't work.

I dont think its a big issue - she will know her name... the real issue is your sanity if people call her things that annoy you.
Kailyn goes by Kailyn or KiKi. I endorse and approve those names. I dont like her being called Kay, Kay-lee (thats an entirely different name IMO). or anything else for that matter! lol.

My niece McKenna goes by McKenna, Kenna, or Poopie pants (thats what I call her, lol) - she's almost 2 and has no problem knowing her names. She probably has more but I cant think of them now!

My nephew Dillon goes by: Dillon, Dill,. Dill Weed, Dilbert, Dil Pickle, Dilly, Dil Dil, and more. He's only one... but he responds to everything - probably since the Dil part is pretty consistant! lol

I wouldn't worry about it at all. You know, she may get older ( school aged) and end up being called Gabby b/c that is what she likes. You never know. My sister's name is Kimberly. I called her by her full name, my parents called her Kimmy and now she goes by Kim.

I don't think she will be confused.
