Quoting Slvrmoon:“ Honestly, this is kind of the price you have to pay for giving your kid a name that comes with nick names. ... [snip!] ... wanted ElleOR Ellie. All babies go by an assortment of nicknames, but they still know which of those names belong to them!”Yes, I think you're right. Maybe we should have considered a name that couldn't be shortened to avoid the confusion. We tried to come up with a full name (Gabrielle) that she could go by when she's mature but wanted to shorten it to something cute while she's young. Geez, I never dreamed it would be such an issue. I don't know why it bugs me but it does. I guess I'll just continue to call her Elle and introduce her as Elle and hope everyone else catches on. I know that she will probably tryto choose her own nickname when she's older but from experience, it ususally doesn't catch on. My name is Joan Allyson and I when I was in junior high, I wanted to go by Allyson or Ally and it just didn't happen, I was known as Joan to everyone that knew me.
Quoting Audri's Mommy:“ I had a freind named Gabrielle in high school and everyone since she was little called her Brie(her siblings, ... [snip!] ... like " Hi, What's your name?" she would always answer "Gabrielle, and I'm 4 years old "... i don't think it will confused her.”Thanks for your response. It's nice to hear of someone who's known a Gabrielle or two. I think that I'm mostly annoyed with the nickname Ellie than I am worried about her confusion. I also really just want my husband to go along with my nickname choice because he chose her full name. I guess I should look on the bright side because so far we haven't heard her referred to as Gabby much, which is what I was really trying to avoid from the beginning. (No offense to any Gabby's out there, I just really love Elle as her nickname).
Quoting jamils_mommy:“ I thought I would want my sons nick name to be JJ.. but now when I hear people call him that I cringe... ... [snip!] ... names, You don't get to choose them... Anybody can call them anything they want, and there isn't much you can do about it...”
Quoting ChristophersMommy:“ With Christopher it is the same way! When we picked his name we thought we would call him CJ. My Dad ... [snip!] ... Ellie is a 'baby' type of name (no offense to those with it)and Elle is one she may use as a women. (sorry to write a novel)”
Quoting jpetersen:“ Thanks for your response. I suppose Gabrielle will have plenty of nicknames before it's all said and ... [snip!] ... name?" Then I said, "It's Gabrielle, but we call her Elle for short". I was pretty annoyed by the time we left, not sure why.”
Quoting ChristophersMommy:“ It's so hard now! We went to see my husbands grandparents. And they kept calling Christopher 'Chris'. ... [snip!] ... the perfect name. And they are YOUR baby and want it to be what you want it to be. Atleast while you can still control it! =)”Yes, yes, yes, I totally know where you're coming from. We considered so many names while I was pregnant. We finally ended up with Gabrielle but I think it's because we had to make a decision, I was in labor! In hind sight, there were lovely names we could have chosen but they were either too popular, didn't sound well with our last name, had the the potential of playground teasing, etc. I guess my point is that you strive for a great name and then once they're born, all of a sudden you're dealing with a whole new ballgame-nicknames! I want to establish the nickname I want her to go by and hopefully she'll like it and won't be called anything different. Afterall, when I was young, I actually tried to go by my middle name and it didn't work.
