posted 16th Feb '08
My daughter is almost 2 weeks old and every now and then she makes the weirdest noise....like if you were to blow up a balloon, then squeeze the end while slowly letting the air out....that sound! like she is leaking! is this normal??? scares the heck out of me!

Use a nasal aspirator it's probably just some boogers. Or she may be snoring.

Could be normal, i cant say. I can say this though, when my daughter was barely born she would make wierd noises and i would be worried!! i was worried about SIDS and the rota virus... and sometiemes she would breathe real fast, but it was normal. Only way to know is to ask a doctor i guess, but lets hope she's fine

You should call your doc just for your peace of mind, but baby books say not to worry unless the baby turns blue, cause they're just starting to get the hang of breathing...it sounds a bit extreme right lol

Cassie used to do that when she was young, and it used to scare the crap out of me, but it is nothing to worry about.

This is how my doctor explained it to me:It is just because their throat is adjusting to breathing in its new environment it is in. Her throat has spent so much time only allowing aminotic fluid down and not breathing that it is sometimes narrow, making the noise.

So pretty much like you expalined it with the balloon. Its completely normal! Only time to worry is if your little one is blue.

I used to freak out at the noises that my baby would make! They are normal 99% of the time. Try to get it on video because in a few months you will forget about all of those cute little noises they made that little.

My son did that too when he was first born especially when he would eat. I didn't think anything of it, I just thought babies made silly sounds so it was normal. It turned into a raspy sound and at 5 months the doctor said he had a soft larynx which inproves over time. Well at 6 months now she wants to send him to a ear nose throat specialist. You may want to ask about laryngomalacia, the technical term for it.

She's right. Get it on video.

And as far as I know, it's normal. My sons doing it now and my daughter did it for the first two months of her life. But if it really concerns you, call the doc.

Go see an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) doctor also known as an ontolarygologist. My little girl started making wheezing noises on inspiration and expiration when she was about six weeks old. A trip to the ped. resulted in them finding her oxygen a bit low and an ambulance ride to Le Bonheur (I happen to live in Memphis next to one of the best children's hospitals in the world, thank god!). She was xrayed and scoped and determined to have laryngotracheamalacia (floppy windpipe). Alot of infants get this and most of the time they do not do anything as it resolves itself over time. Their rings in the trachea have to harden as they grow so the ENT will generally tell you to lay them on their side to sleep and keep them upright as much as possible when awake. Also, they reccommend at least an hour of tummy time (if they're just learning to hold up their head) each day. Well, at our check up 2 weeks after the 3 day hospital stay, our ENT immediately cleared his office and surgery schedule and sent her to the ICU this past Thursday. He was almost 100% sure she had an obstruction of some sort. On Friday he took her into the OR and looked past her vocal cords (something they can't do with the regular nose scope) and it turns out she had a hemangioma (blood vessel tumor) on her trachea. Common thing for kids to get on legs and arms - very rare on tracheas but it can happen. So she has a 99% blockage in her airway. They performed a tracheostomy and placed a trach tube in so she could breath until the surgery could be performed to remove the tumor (maybe in the next six months). Anyway, my point is, don't play with breathing problems and pass them off as normal. IF ANYTHING seems off to you, go have it checked. Our little girl wouldn't have lived past this past Sunday, something I don't want to think about. And she is still in the hospital and will be for at least another week.
