18 week ultrasound...Need some reassurance

posted 16th Feb
Hello everyone. My wife and I just went to our first ultrasound to find out the sex of our new addition. We already have a little girl who is almost 4. So they are doing the ultrasound and I notice it is taking longer than it did with my daughter. The lady leaves the room and another one comes in. She starts doing it ultrasound as well and says that the heart looks like it has an abnormality. She said it could be the way the baby is lying, it could be a muscle, it could just be a thicker part of the heart, or...it could be a tumor. My wife and I are freaking out. They made us an appointment this tuesday to so see a echo-something.Anyone else have something like this happen and have it be no biggie, or even the reverse and it was actualy something? Any insight would be very much appreciated.

Doctor's tend to say a lot of things prematurely , I would just keep the stressing to a minimum until you know for sure. She shouldnt be stressing in her condition anyways. You are in my prayers!!

Just try and relax even though I know it's tough. It's totally normal for sonographers (I'm one) to get "another set of eyes" to look at something. I wouldn't worry at all until the specialist does the echocardiogram. Regualr sonographers aren't usually trained to do these special type ultrasounds. Only a well-trained echocardiographer. Wishing you all thes best!!!

My 20 weeks U/S sort of the same thing happened. After 45 minutesof the woman desperately trying to get my little one to move around enough to see what needed to be seen she tooka ton ofpictures and then went to get another technician. They spent like 20 minutes whispering and looking at the pictures and then poking and prodding me again. I was told that there was a very good chance that my baby had an abnormality with her heart valve.

I was scheduled for another U/S 2 weeks later. turns out it was nothing. My little one had been in a bad position and they thought they saw something that wasn't actually there. Her heart was perfect just like the rest of her.

I wouldn't worry too much U/S are far from perfect and even to thetrained eye they can be hard to read.I'll hope for all the best for you, your wife and the newest addition.

I've had a similar experience with this pregnancy, except instead of the heart, the issue has been with my baby's brain. I've had 14 ultrasounds, an amino and a fetal MRI. At my last ultrasound (on Monday) it appeared as though everything they thought was wrong was gone. My perinatologist has been telling me at every visit, ultrasound technology is much more advanced than it used to be, so doctors are noticing things they never would have noticed before. Things that could be related to position of the baby, things that are actually normal and resolve themselves by the end of the pregnancy, that they've never noticed before. I know its hard, but try not to get to worked up yet. The fetal echo cardiogram (I think that's what you said your wife was having) will be able to tell you so much more. Try to stay positive, and don't let your wife freak out too much (I know, its a big job, but try to keep her calm). Let us know what happens.

Every Doctor appointment we have had with our regular doctor he has told us the baby sounds very healthy and everything looked and sounded good. So I am just praying that when we get the test everything turns out for us. I appreciate everyones words of wisdom.

Thanks Again!

Hi Josh
Sorry they had to scare you like that. When do you go see the doc? That is when they will give you the news on what if ANYTHING is wrong. More then likely it is just that nothing but what they gave you as info. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

They should've sent you to a REAl specialist in the first place, the people who work at dr offices are only U/S techs. Wait till you go to the real one.

i wouldn't worry - ive had a lot of friends who's babies have had "issues" with their hearts on the ultrasound and it has always turned out to be nothing. keep in mind the babies heart is so small right now its difficult to get a picture. something similar happened to me with my baby's kidney. they just made me another appointment for an ultrasound at 28 weeks, so it would be bigger and easier to see. good luck!!

To try and reassure you... I had a co-worker that reciently had a baby girl and just a few weeks earlier they had said that they saw something on / in the heart.... something they thought could have been a tumor. As it turns out she was bornat 32 weeks or so but there was nothing wrong with her heart. She actaully was very healthy for being so early. She weighed in over 3 lbs and ended up being released from the hospital after like 4 weeks!
So, not saying your fears arent founded, but dont over worry just yet. I could very well be nothing at all!
