For the women who are quitting smoking for their baby

posted 15th Feb '08
Ok, so I have smoked for a few years and tried to quit several times. Finally I have more motivation than ever to quit for my baby. TODAY is the day I have chosen to quit. So I am looking for support from other women who have done this or are trying to. I have read some of the posts in the forums related to smoking while pregnant but it seems like most of it is women who are not going through it and don't understand how difficult it is. Every women realizes this is a serious issue, and if it was as simple as putting cigarettes down forever then I think the cigarette companies would close down for sure because thats what everyone would do. But its not that simple. Even when you are pregnant! Today is the day for me, does anyone want to join me? Share your thoughts!

Good luck!! I quit when I got pregnant, not right when I found out but not too long after. I got lucky and it got to the point where they tasted nasty and made me sick, so it was actually pretty easy for me to quit. I still cheat every once in a great while if I'm around someone who smokes, I'll have a hit or 2 and maybe 3 times I've actually had a whole cigarette but that's it. I know it's hard but you are doing it for a great reason and you'll feel sooo much better after you quit!! I didn't realize how bad I smelled until after I quit and was around smokers lol. I wish you all the luck in the world and if I can be of any help, just let me know!

i quit as soon as i found out. i had only been smoking about a year but it was still hard to give up, and i think what made it easyer was no one would smoke around me. my mom and my boyfriend would leave the room, witch helped alot. some times even now, if i smell them i want one, ha ha good luck momma hang in there

I didnt quit right away I cut back..somehow (and god knows how I did this) but I immediately cut myself back from almost a pack a day to literally 3-5 cigarettes a day...it was hard, I'm not going to lie...to this day I still want to smoke but Its been 3 months and with the support of my family and friends, and the thought of this child growing in my belly; I know that I CANNOT smoke until after I'm done being pregnant and I still may not start back up..if for no other reason than my health...good luck to you mama!!!

Oh my... it's very hard. I realized I can't be around anyone smoking. It took me awhile to quit after I found out I was preggers (I know that sounds awful). Where I work there is constantly someone lighting up, my dh smokes too. It's very very hard and I wish you the best of luck, just try to stay away from people that smoke or ask them to get away from you. Again good luck.

Congrats on setting your quit date! I have set 5 of them and for one reason or another it's been post-poned! I did; however, go through Smoking Cessation classes and have a plan in place. I've been smoking for 21 years and I realized that this is harder than it looks. I orginally smoked 3 pks a day back years ago...then I changed to non-menthol and only smoked 1.5 pksa day. Now, the best I can do is maybe a half a pack. I cannot remember a time in my adult life of when I was able to call myself a non-smoker. I plan on doing that soon!

Smoking is more addictive than cocaine and it's more difficult to quit. If only they could lock us up for 30 days like they do alcoholics and I think I'd be fine.

Good luck to everyone as I know it's very difficult and hopefully soon I'll be joining you on the non-smoking side.

Wow, this is all exactly what I wanted to hear! Women strugglilng with the same thing as me. Since my first posting I am still smoking  . But I think going from a pack a day to maybe 2 and 1/2 a day is a step forward. I am also finding that I don't want them like I did and also suprisingly enough I don't think about it like I normally would. My Mom recently saw a special on TV about how quitting smoking was equivelent to quitting heroin. I believe that and also feel thankful I have never done anything like that seeing how difficult it is for me to quit just cigs. It is a POWERFUL addiction. I think my main problem now it that my husband still smokes and smelling it on him sometimes makes it difficult. But I want to make a healthy and good smelling home for this baby coming and I am more determined everyday. Thanks for the support!

I gave up as soon as I found out I was pregnant with each of my children. Started up again around about 5 months after they were born but hoping this time I can stay away from them. Never did believe in smoking while pregnant.

I dont smoke but I am very happy you have decided to quit. I have been through the quitting with a family member I know how hard it can be. But it's true...and your dr will tell you, if you are always around someone who smokes you will not quit. Dr oz on oprah said that it's like a less than 5% chance that you will quit if your SO smokes...so maybe he can work on quitting with you? I wish you the best of luck! And down to two a day is a great start.
