pap while pregnant?

posted 28th May '11
is it safe to have a pap smear, or some other form of vaginal swab during pregnancy? im 7 months and i got to the doctor about every 3 weeks now and have complained every visit of strange discharge. im pretty much positive it is a yeast infection because of how the discharge looks but i just want to be absolutely sure. every time i mention my problems to my doctor she tells me to pee in a cup and says everything looks fine. then last time she wrote me a prescription for that AWFUL flagyl which is for bv and makes me extremely sick every time i take it and leaves me with a yeast infection. i didn't even test positive for bv so i don't see why she prescribed it and i didn't take it. i don't see why they haven't just swabbed me down there and looked under the microscope to see what it is. i need to know before its time for my baby to pass through there...is there some reason they haven't done it by now?

Yep i've had a few of them this pregnancy, only way they can know what kind of infection it is. Safe!

The first one I had while pregnant made me bleed, but everything turned out fine. After that I just asked them to swab and not use that thing to open you up, which works too. They just can't look at your cervix.

yeah def, ive had 2 during my pregnancy. sometimes in rare cases they even to Colposcopys on pregnant women (if its something serious enough) where they swab and then take a biopsy of the abnormal part. they dont like to do it in fear of causing miscarriage but my OB said they do it occasionally. a papsmear is totally fine! I just had a vaginal swab last week at my appt (im 37 weeks now) n they said its a routine swab that they do for every woman

I didn't think you needed a swab for them to tell if you had a yeast infection, but yes... I had one done while I was pregnant.

Ask them to do a wet mount slide. That does not require a pap per say. They just take a q-tip and swab the inside of the vagina....if it is yeast then you need Triazole. It's a 3 time supossitory you do at night in your vagina.

Vaginal swab is okay. Pap is pointless... its a test for cancer, and it only can tell if your cells are abnormal. You're pregnant, so your cervix isn't normal... so your test may come back false positive.

I'd wait to get a pap until at least 6wks pp.

yeah, they just swabbed me last time, because those plastic things that open you up hurt me like no other. It might be diff for others though.

Not necessarily. Now, if you're under 21 they don't give you a pap smear. I'm 19 and on my second, and I've never had a pap.

And it increases your risk of miscarriage.

Does it have an odor or do you itch??

Even during pregnancy we all have discharge, some more than others, it will be a creamy white. Could just be natural discharge from your body. Once you get farther along it will thin out and almost seem like you are constantly wet.-
