Insanely scared

posted 13th Feb '08
Ok, so......... I tested positive for GBS, no big deal, I know. Here's the problem, I'm absolutely terrified of needles. I pass out any time I get a shot and almost any time I get blood drawn. So since I tested positive for GBS I need to have an IV during labor and delivery to recieve antibiotics. I saw the smallest needle that they have........ And it's HUGE! I seriously don't think I can handle that. Especially since it will be in me for HOURS.

I just need to vent, I'm absolutely terrified now. I seriously don't think I can handle that.

i think you get an IV either way hun. everyone i know did, natural or c-section. i know that may not help, butGBS pos. or not you're still going to have to deal with a needle.

well the needle doesnt stay in you its a tube... and its bendable so it wont hurt so much... just do not rip it out and make sure you have a nurse who has done it more than once cause the nurse who did my last one was an idiot and tired to put it in my arm...

See if they can give you an anti anxiety prior to the needle,

You will be okay. I had to have an iv for fluids and pitocin and it wasn't that bad. Just be strong momma...you can do it! Let the nurses know your fear and they'll try to make it as easy for you as they can. Best wishes!

No, my midwife said that you don't have to have one as long as you can stay hydrated, you don't test positive for GBS, and aren't using drugs.

It depends on your doctors.

The needle only looks big because it is covered in a flexible tube that stays in your arm. It is not that bad, just don't look and think about how it's for your baby. There was always a good chance you would have an IV during labor anyway. Are you getting an epidural? I think the IV is minor compared to the rest of labor and delivery. I am sure you will do just fine.

Yeah, the whole tube thing is what REALLY scares me. I can't stand having things going through my skin. And there is NO WAY that anything is going in my hand.

I had a totally natural delivery, with no drugs at all, and they still gave me the damn IV.

No, I REALLY don't like the idea of a needle anywhere near my spine. So an epi or spinal block are completely out of the question. The initial "prick" of the needle isn't what bothers me, it's not the pain that bothers me, it's the whole idea of needles or having something sticking out of you that I can't stand. If it was just in and out I'd be fine, well, better anyway. But the fact that I'm going to have a tube in my body going through my skin for HOURS is what I can't stand.
