Breast feeding issue!

posted 13th Feb '08
Ok so i'm already 36 weeks and my breasts haven't grown at all this whole pregnancy. I really wanted to breastfeed but its obvious that i'm not producing any milk. I had a hard time with my first pregnancy too, it just didn't come in. My sister-in-law is also pregnant with her second child and she's 4 months and her breasts are huge and swollen. She said that with her first pregnancy she wouldn't produce milk so she sat there for hours and hours pumping till the milk came in. I'm thinking should i do the same thing? Maybe if i pump then my body will get the clue that i need milk.

Any advice??? i need that milk!!! lol

A lot of the time you don't start really producing until maybe 2 days after your baby is born. Don't assume that because you aren't leaking or anything that you won't produce.

Well your milk will never come in while pregnant, it comes a few days after. What you should be making now is colostrum. I have never heard to punp while pregnant. I would call an LC at your hospital and ask them.

Your milk doesn't come in until after the baby is born.
Your breasts should be producing colostrum at this point. You may leak some you may not. It's completely normal.
I haven't grown any in the chest area either but that in NO way inhibits you from being able to breastfeed your child.

Just because your breasts aren't swollen or huge doesn't mean anything. My breasts were insanely large with my two other pregnancies....and I had a hard time with my first. Formula fed my second. My breasts aren't real large now....but like GK said, your milk sometimes doesn't come in for a few days until after the baby is born. The first few days is mostly colustrum (sp?) anyway. Don't get discouraged. Just give it a shot and try for a while. If after a week or so, it's not panning out.....than you can throw in the towel. But I wouldn't do it prematurely.

Thats right, I doesnt matter the size of ur boobs, youll still produce enough milk for ur baby. mine are big but havent gotten bigger since ive been preg.
you may produce colostrum and will when the baby is born... but u wont have milk until a few days or even weeks until the baby is born... i ve heard it take as long as 2 weeks... but never before 2 days

I don't have anything else to add, the mamas have done a great job with their info. I just wanted to reinforce what they said and encourage you to not be discouraged. Not having pregnant breasts (s'what I call'em as they get all nice n big when preggo) does not equate to an inability to produce the milk. You will know soon after childbirth whether you can breastfeed or not. ((hugs)) 4 weeks to go huh! How exciting!
