Refusing the Glucose Screening Test

posted 12th Feb '08
My next appt is on Feb 19th and I am seriously thinking of refusing the glucose test. I'm not overweight, I weighed 110 when I got pregnant, no one in my family has ever had diabetes, and no one has ever had gestastional diabetes on either side. I hate to have my blood drawn, I always have a panic attack, ALWAYS, and I hate that crap, it takes days to get over it, so I just want to pass on the test. Has anyone else passed on their's?

It has nothing to do with family history or your weight. I dont think any doctor will let you skip it. I had a friend that was 102 lbs when she got pregnant had no family history of it and she still had it.

Its really not that bad. At my appointment they just pricked my finger an hour after I had the drink.. The drink isnt very good but its not as bad as everyone tells you. Its like carbonated, lightly flavored, water.. (I got the lemon lime kind).. Its important to know if youre okay or not, if you dont take the test and you do have diabetes it could hurt your baby.. You'll be fine. <3

you should do it. its not for you its for your baby.
if you donthave a past history then you prob have nothing to worry about so taking the test should be easy.
by the way needles are nothing compared to child birth it just sort of preps you for the ride
also gest. diabities has nothing to do with weight i have known a lot of tiny people that ahve gotten it dur to pregnancy then it had gone away
goodluck though

I almost passed it I was suppose to do it for my 28th week but I never went at on my 36th weeks which was a couple of days ago they told me I have to do it because its etremely important so I did it and its my 2nd time during pregnancy. I hate it because I have to stay there for so long with out eatting but I only did it for my baby and his health. I dont want to regret anything later on you know but hey its your choice. Your body and your baby. Good luck!

i'm sure that if you really want to refuse the test that you could. however, gestational diabetes has nothing to do with your weight or your family history since it is not true diabetes. i had to have both the 1 hour and 3 hour tests and it turned out to be negative. the thing is, you might want to know if you have it since the complications include the baby growing very large, causing you to have to have a c section. that's a hell of a lot worse than having a little blood drawn. if you do have it, it does need to be managed. good luck with whatever you decide, but i would think that you would care more about the health of the baby than your phobia.

It doesn't matter with the weight gain or family history for gestational diabetes.  You or your baby can die if gestational diabetes goes undetected.  In fact they'll want to induce you (probably) if you do have it.  You would be considered high risk.  What's one blood test to all that, you know?

If it's that big of a problem talk to your doctor and see if they'll give you some anti anxiety drugs if you really have that big of a problem with getting your blood drawn. I think in the big picture, you would never be able to forgive yourself if something happened to your baby just because you didn't want a blood test.  Although, gestational diabetes is probably unlikely, it's very possible you could have it.  Just like anyone else.
