So, DH has the 2 1/2 year old and the 5 day old is asleep, so I have some actual factual time to myself. So here's my story...
I had my normal doctors appt on Friday the 1st. I had my daughter with me because DH and I decided since I wasn't working, we would save the extra $150 aweek for daycare and I would just keep her with me. Which meant she had to go to the doctors officewith me. Anyway, we got there (a little late, like always) and got everything settled, peed in the cup, got to the room, and waited on the doc. Normal appt.
The doc asked me as he was about to leave if we had talked about induction, since I was already overdue. We hadn't, so I asked him what he wanted to do. He told me he'd check me and see from there. If I was close to a 4 or at a 4, we'd induce early in the beginning of the week (this week) and if I was closer to a 2, we'd talk about later in the week. So he's checking me and he looks at me and asks me if I've been in any pain. I laughed and just said "DUH!" And he told me there was a reason for that...I was at a full 5.
So he says "How'd you like to go today?" I thought he was kidding and blurted out "SURE! The sooner the better!" So he leaves, I get dressed, get my daughter gathered up, who has been a total angel this entire time, and go out to meet the doc and set up next weeks appt.
He's on the phone with labor and delivery! I honest to goodness thought he was kidding. So he sends me over there, telling me congratulations as I leave (2 docs at the practice, he wasn't the one delivering that day). I'm so nervous I'm shaking from head to foot and my daughters like "Are you okay mommy?"
So I call my husband and ask him how soon he could get off work if it was an emergency. He, being the thick headed male that he is, says "I dunno...what's wrong?" So I told him I was heading to labor and delivery because I was at a 5 and the doc wanted to induce me. He thought I was kidding.
I finally managed to convince him that I'm serious and he goes "Oh shit! I'll call my boss!" Then I called my mother in law to tell her I was going to the hospital so she could come get my daughter. That was around 11:45 and I got to labor and delivery at noon and already had a visitor waiting for me. My mother in law works in a church and told her coworkers where she was going and one of the pastors called another of the pastors that was at a hospital down the street and he was there waiting for me. So while I was waiting for my mother in law to get there, I called the rest of the family (they throw huge parties in the waiting room when I'm in labor.
A party for me, without me there...go figure...)
They start to monitor my contractions, which at that point were at 9 minutes apart. So the doc comes in to break my water. Let me tell ya ladies, that is the grossest feeling in the world. I damn near couldn't sit still...I wanted to get up and get in the shower. *shudders* My contractions sped up to every 5 minutes and they ask me if I want the epi. I positively yelled "YES!" at them and the anaesthesiologist comes in 10 minutes later. I really didn't want it at that point because I wasn't in a lot of pain yet and I figured it would take him at least an hour to get to me. But, he had a list of patients a page and a half long and I was the easiest one to do as I was the farthest along and (no harm intended here for anyone) the skinniest. And he said if I waited until he was done with the rest of the list, it would take him at least 2 hours, more like 3 or 4 to get to me and I had no idea if I could wait that long. So, got the epi...hurt worse than I remember it with my daughter, but I was in a LOT more pain when I got it with her.
Well, the epi pretty much stopped my contractions, so at 3:30 they started the pitocin. At 5:00, I had progressed to a 6. By 6:00, I was still at a 6. By 6:30, I was feeling pressure so I told the nurse. So she checked again and I was at an 8. So she got the room ready and set up and the doc came in 5 minutes laterand wanted to have me do a few pushes to get his head decended further down...see what it would do, ya know? He checked and I was at a 10 and said "This baby is coming NOW!" So at 6:55, we started pushing. And at 7:03, my beautiful baby bear Seann Michael Daviswas born.
He weighed in at a whopping 9 lbs, 2.6 oz and was 20 inches long. Short and fat.
We're home and settled now and quite happily adjusted. My daughter is really great with him. She's pushing
my buttons all she can, but I am choosing to be thankful that she isn't taking it out on Seann. He is the absolute best baby. He literally only cries when you change his diaper (we had him circumcised). I'm seriously getting 6-8 hours of sleep a night. Not all at once, but still...
We're also breastfeeding. We did have a few sticky spots the other day when he wouldn't latch on, but it was due to engorgement. Now that that's going away, I'm much happier.
I have to say, I am a very lucky woman and I can only hope the rest of you have such a pleasant experience as I had. Good luck to all you expecting mommy's!
