Breast to formula-constipated

posted 5th Feb '08
Mybaby is a month old now. I started out breastfeeding and then he pooped with every single feeding. I gradually changed him over to formula and now he stays constipated. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might help? I've heard of Karo, how much? The light or dark kind? Can I give him water? I've used a half a child suppository a few times andit'sthick and there's a lot of it. I feel bad cause I know it's from changing him to formula. I've tried pumping and starting back up, but I'm only getting 1/2 ounce now. Is it possible for my milk to build back up?

You may want to try a different formula. To me (not an expert by any means) sounds like its not agreeing with him at all!

How long is he going without pooping? Formula fed babies can go 3-4 days without pooping and be fine.

Did you make a slow transistion or a quick change? My daughter had similar problems even with a slow transistion to formula. Instead of a suppository I used the end of a thermometer. If you want to get your milk supply up ask your doctor to put you on "reglan" it is a pill you take to up your supply. It worked for me. My aunt believes that if you drink a couple of beers it will up your supply. then just pump and dump. Hopefully your little guy will get regular soon. Also if he is on poly-vi-sol with iron you might wan to hold off for a little while

Well, I've only been letting him go 2 days. 3 and 4 days just seem like too long too me, especially when he waspreviously going with every feeding.

I gradually changed him over to formula over the course ofa week. I didn't think of using a thermometer instead. I wish I could try the beer thing, but I can't stand the taste of beer. I will ask my dr about the reglan though.
