Carseat question...

posted 5th Feb '08
I have always thought that the middle (in the back, of course) was the safest place for a carseat.Incase you were hit on the side. I have heard different things though. Some people say that it should be on one side or the other not in the middle. My car has side curtain airbags though. So I really dont know... What do you ladies think?

I've always heard middle is safest, but not necessary. Like now, I have two children and only one backseat, so my 7 month old is in the middle, but my two year old is behing the passenger seat (so I can still reach back there and swat her when she's being mean to her sister J/K).

Thanks for replying. I put my 8 yr old step-daughter in the "swatter" seat   So I know what you are talking about there. She likes to "pet" on my 10 week old to get a reaction out of her. Just giving her "the look" usually works for me though!

Thanks! You little one is a cutie! My oldest is into just trying to tick me off now, so she yells at her sister to "stop looking at her" and then reaches over and whacks her.. I just LOOOOOOOOOOVE two! (note the sarcasm)

I think it depends on each vehicle..

My SUV owners manual says either side but NOT the middle. So Hailey's seat is positioned behind the passengers seat.

*My backseat spilt folds so I imagine this is the reason its not recommend for a carsesat to go in the middle*

That makes sense. I never knew what the actual "rule" was on it.

Oh my gosh I bet that is nerve wrecking. Im so paranoid of Mackenzie getting hurt. I dont know how I would react to anybody whacking her. Im lucky Sarah is pretty good with her.

eh,...it's not too bad. Alyssa is a rough and tumble kinda girl. She pretty much just whacks her back. LOL. Sometimes I swear there's two little boys back there instead of my little princesses!

I have Kailyn behind the passanger seat and I like her there. I dont swat at her (yet) but I give her her paci and push the buttons on her toy to play her music. When she is in the middle I cant reach back as easily when I am driving (super safe I know, but what are you going to do! At least I'm not on my cell too, lol). The fire department car seat check people told me that the middle or behind the passanger is the safest place. Most side impact accidents occur on the drivers side since that is where oncoming traffic would hit if you were turning into traffic. They recommended putting the baby behind the passanger and an older child behind the driver if need me (my backseat isnt very large and fitting on in the middle AND one on a side wouldnt work).

It is easier for me to reach her with her in the middle to give her paci or whatever the need may be. Like you said "super safe" but we got to do what we got to do! I feel like she is safer in the middle of the seat. I was just curious to what you ladies thought about it.
