Maternity Leave Ouestons

posted 4th Feb '08
Help!! My boss is pressuring me to let him know what my plans are re: my maternity leave. He wants to know when I plan on going out on leave and when I plan on coming back. I don't quite know & want to know what others of you are planning on doing! I plan on returning part time after the baby is born but how long do after that is really the question?!?!

Generally most maternity leave is 6-12 weeks all together, so I would base it on that.

Tell him you plan on working up until you have the baby (if thats the plan) and you will be back in however many weeks you get off..

The problem is there is no set maternity plan at my office. No rules on anything he just kinda makes it up as he goes! Frustrating!!!

I also have been getting flack from our corporate office to tell them exactly when I'll be out, I've told them verbally that I'll be stopping working 2-3 weeks prior to my due date, and I know I'm planning on taking the max. amount of time I can. Estimate it--it can't be set in stone anyway, because if something happens and you have to stop sooner than planned, they have to let you stop working (I'm assuming you're in the US, so the FMLA would apply either way...). Just estimate...

I used to work in HR.

By law they have to give you job protection for up to 12 weeks. this is unpaid leave but, they cannot fire you for thoes 12 weeks. This is the Family Medical Leave Act or FMLA. To get paid you have to talk to your HR department.

My company will pay me for 8 weeks unless my dr. says I need to stay out longer. If that were to happen then I'd get paid for up to 12 weeks. after that I'd have to use my long term disablity but, I did not purchase this protection so, I would not get this option.
If you have any other questions about leave, feel free to pm me

I hope this helps.

If you have been there for 1 year or more or worked 1250 hours you can legally take up to 12 weeks leave.
