Breastfeeding dilema....Help :(

posted 4th Feb '08
Okay, so i've been breastfeeding my son from day one (hes 2 and a half weeks old) and I think i have a plugged duct. It's like half of my boob will empty when he nurses but the other wont. I've tried holding warm/hot cloths on there then pumping or feeding him again to get it to open but it hasnt worked. Is there any trick out there I should know or is it pretty much just a "i need to call my Dr." thing?

help please...its frustrating (not to mention painful! ) and its frustrating Dayson because I have to change how i feed him because of it.

any advice is SERIOUSLY appreciated!!!!

Try taking a shower with the water hitting the clogged one, It hurts like hell but seemed to work for me. Also, if it becomes red and really swollen, call your doc ASAP because it can cause infection. Mine did that and then they started to bleed. I feel for you, the pain is horrid

i know its gonna hurt...but in the hot shower massage it roughly. Use pressure, but if its infected you need to call your doc

Another thing you should do is latch the baby on your boob with the mouth pointing towards the blocked duct. ie: if duct is on outside part of boob put baby on in football hold. But angle baby is such a way that they are pointing at area of blockage. This will hurt while baby is feeding but the minute they hit the block it is like a pop and you will feel it release. Good luck

Another remedy is potato slices. It sounds weird but it works. Just place potato slices in your dark coloured bra (the potatoes will stain fabrics purple), and change them every hour.

Can you see a lactation consultant? There should be one at your local hospital.

But the best thing you can do is find your local La Leche League group and they can help you out and it's so nice to have a group of women who also breastfeed to meet up with once a month and all support one another.
