No embryo visible at 6 wks?? Just the sac??

posted 4th Feb '08
Well, we had our first appointment on Friday and Iwas 6 weeks and 1 day along. Our docwas hesitant but did the ultrasound to see if we could see anything. There was a sac, but no embryo visible. This happened with my son and scared me thinking it was a blighted ovum, but he was ok and visible on the next ultrasound. Anyone experience anything like this? Just curious.

UPDATE::
WE GOT BABY ACTION!!! LOL!!!

We are so excited that there was a little baby in there at our last ultrasound!! Wow!! This is the second false alarm with the empty sac. Starting to wonder why the ultrasound so early when it scares the patooties out of some women and causes more stress than needed when doing the ultrasound too early?

The same thing happened to me so don't worry. It is too early to see a fetal pole at this time. It will be visible on your next ultrasound so don't worry.

My 1st ultrasound was at 8 weeks and all we saw was the sac too. So now worries ... you will see it soon.

My first ultrasound was at 6wks 1 day also. They saw two sacs (twins) but no embryos. I was scared too... but went back at 11wks 1 day for another ultrasound, and there were two little babies with two beating hearts in there. Keep your head up.

You guys are making me feel so much better. I had this happen with my second child, but it freaked me out then. The doc suggested I could have my levels checked and then see if they double in 48 hours. I told her to let God take over and if its meant to be a baby it will, and that I am okay with that. I am sure its all going to be okay, but I still have my moments of concern since I have been a little crampy. But I was crampy with my two prior pregnancies so I know that's normal. I guess under the circumstance I am just worried. We just love them already, and worry from day one.

Here's a story someone similar to that..
My cousin was about11 weeks pregnant with her son and started having VERY heavy cramping, bleeding, etc. This was on Memorial Day and the doctors was closed for the following Monday. So they set up an appt for her to do a D&C that Tuesday. (This happened on a Sunday) Well, that night she had horrible cramping and bleeding so she called her doc and he said to go to the ER for an emergency D & C. When she got there, the ER doctor did blood tests, and did an u/s. In the u/s, there was no visible fetus- just the sac. But her HCG levels were so high, he was very hesistant on doing a D & C. He called an u/s tech to come in and do the u/s, and she put a pillow under my cousins hips and there was little Nicolas.   Thank goodness she didn't get a D & C cause he was hiding there the whole time. Our family has a history of a tilted uterus, and she also had a subchorionic bulge that he was hiding behind.

So moral of the story- ALWAYS get a second opinion! My first doctor told me I was having a miscarriage from like 5 weeks. (I was bleeding as well) Here I am at 23 weeks.. and she's still in there growin away.

I am so grateful to have a place like this to come to - where their are women that understand and do not think I am nuts for crying or worrying. It is serious and we are already feeling overly emotional at times. And we need support now more than ever.Ya'll are great!

Same thing happened to me. I was scared to DEATH! I was afraid I'd have another miscarriage. The next time I could see my little peanut and a heart beat, but it still doesn't look like anything but a tadpole! The dr is still suspecting twins based on hormones, but nothing like that showed. I go to the dr's today to see what else is going on. Good Luck!

That is so awesome!! I am so happy for you!! That would be great!! I wish I was having twins!! Why not get two out of the way in one shot!! LOL - We want a large family and that would certainly help the road to one!! Let me know how your appointment goes today!!

I too went in for an U/S at my 6 week appt. I was told there was no fetus and that there was just a sac. The Dr. recommended a D&C or methaltrexate to terminate the impending miscarriage. I didn't feel good about this decision, since they stated that my HCG was still rising adequately. I went back again at 7weeks and requested a different OB. This dr. told me that she saw no fetal pole or baby either, but since my HCG had risen again, she didn't find any reason to terminate yet, just to monitor the pregnancy through HCG levels and ultrasound. I am now 7 weeks 5 days, and will be going back on Thursday for my 3rd ultrasound. My HCG levels doubled again last Friday, so my new OB is sure SOMETHING is going on in there. I too, have a retroverted Uterus, and we are waiting to see if that is why we still have not seen anything on the ultrasound other than a gestational sac. Wishing all of you the best of luck, and I'll keep you all updated on what happens Thursday!

That happened with my 1st pregnancy but I was 9 weeks and no baby.
With this pregnancy I got sent for an ultrasound at 6 weeks 4 days and at first nothing. Then they propped my hips up under a pillow and there was a little bean. Sometimes you are between 5 and 6 weeks and nothing shows then boom you have bean and heartbeat a few days later!
good luck! and stay positive!
