Constipation

posted 3rd Feb
Okay, I am 3 months pregnant and am dealing with terrible constipation. I had problems with this prepregnancy, but I took laxatives then. Now I feel defenseless without them, so I was wondering if there is anything I am allowed to take, or if anyone knows and home remedies that might help me out...

My doctor told me to eat foods with alot of fiber in them. It takes a little while, but it eventually starts to work.

Water Water Water!! Take a stool softener, not a laxative.. The hospital told me after I had Tarren, and was breastfeeding, that laxatives passed on to him but the best thing for ANYONE was water.. It helps push things through. Thats how I was able to take my first bm after delivery.. .I reccomend tons of water and you should "go" either today or late tomorrow.

Drink lots of water and have some Sun Sweet Prunes. These work for me

I eat dried apricots like they're going out of style. Also, have your dr. prescribe you with a pre-natal with a stool softener. That combined with lots of water and a full fiber diet should get things moving!

Milk of Magnesia-- it's on the doctor's 'safe' list.

It tastes TERRIBLE, but it definitely works.

You'll find it right by the other laxatives, it's in a blue bottle.

No, I don't think its an old wive's tale because our vet told us to give our dog corn syrup when she swallowed a rag and couldn't "pass" it. Thanks for all your suggestions. I have suppositories, but I didn't know it was safe to take them...

Whatever you do, avoid any laxatives and corn syrups. These can cause your baby to pass meconium within the placenta and get very sick.

Drinking plenty of water (almost a gallon a day or 3 liters) will help hydrate you as well as keep the contents of your intestines moist enough to pass. Eating enough fiber during the day will also help out a great deal. If you can switch all of your breads, cereals and pastas out with whole grain types, do that and it will make a big difference. I also added milled flax to my yogurts, salads and breading (i.e. homemade corn bread, biscuits, pancakes, breaded chicken, etc.) and that helps too, and it's a great source of omega-3 fatty acids.
