Wisdom Teeth Extraction

posted 2nd Feb '08
Okay sorry this is kinda long...

I went in to the dentist because my mouth was hurting and it turns out that I have a "severe infection" in my wisdom teeth that could harm the baby if I don't get them out. So not only did they do x-rays (which are a no-no in pregnancy) but I have to go to Grand Junction the day before Valentine's day for the procedure... which is going to be very difficult and expensive because of the pregnancy. They said that the procedure poses a risk to the baby, but to not have it done is an even greater risk of premature labor... I called my OB to discuss it with him and he told me not to worry and that everything would be fine, but the dentists freaked me out so bad... they were talking to me like I was dying... the dentist himself took the x-ray instead of his assistant and then instead of talking to me in the exam room he took me into his office and sat me down. Then instead of me calling to set up an appointment for my teeth HE called right in front of me and told them that we have an "emergent situation and can't wait till after the baby is born" He said that we don't even have the time to waste on a consultation appointment... I'm freaking out here...

Has anyone else gone through something like this... or has anyone else had their wisdom teeth pulled while pregnant??

Just remember that he is a dentist and not an OB/GYN. Since it's not his area of expertise, then he wants to be as safe as possible. I don't think it was right of him to basically be flipping out. The only thing that does is cause you to stress. I think your doctor was right. I wouldn't worry too much.

I have not gone through something like this while pregnant, but i had a lot of difficulties with my wisdom teeth for other reasons... If your ob thinks its okay, then just try not to stress as much as you can! So sorry to hear about it though, good luck!

I don't like the way your dentist freaked out in front of you. What did the doctor say about him taking xrays. My dentist tried to get me to take xrays a few months ago and I told him out of the question considering he thinks I MIGHT have a cavity. I told him he can wait until after my child is born.

Well, the one good thing about it is that your dentist isn't being lazy about it and is actually going to do something about the problem before it becomes a bigger issue with your baby.

My doctor knew I was having really bad pain in my mouthand he is the one that sent me to the dentist. Before the dentist took the x-rays he called my OB and had him fax consent in the form of a prescription for a panoramic x-ray with the contingency that I was double shielded.

I understand why you are stressed but it seems like the dentist, even though he could have been MUCH MORE sensitive in the way he dealt with you, it seems like he took the right precautions in calling your OB/GYN which was a heck of a lot more than my dentist did before he tried to convince me to get the xray. You are going to be fine and so will the little one you are carrying.

Im just getting my wisdom teeth in to. It started on friday I noticed some swelling around my wisdom teeth would be coming in. But within literally 3 days my entire mouth was swollen, gums tongue everything. Ive gotten little sores on my tongue, cheeks, and gums. and I cannot chew anything and now my throat and under my jaws are very tender and sore.
My ob said its fine to have them out and I have an apt tomorrow. But I was wondering did anyone elses get this bad this quick? I think being pregant might have made it worse due to the excess plaque but seriously in 3 days it was horrible. Any one else experience this?
Also, how bad is it getting them out? honestly.

OMG- Yes! I had my wisdom teeth pulled when i was pregnant with my middle son. The bottom two hadnt broken through and they were impacted and causing an infection- since i was pregnant, I opted to just be numbed in the mouth- notput under- worst experience ever in the whole world...

i had x-rays, took pain medicine, the whole thing... my son came out fine...

good luck

I was not put under just numbed which did hurt..well felt more like pressure and took tylenol. I had no problems and neither did the baby. My ob/gyn said it would be fine.

I am so glad to hear other people talking about this ....

I have to go to the dentist today and have a root canal done , but first they have to do x-rays ... At first I was freaking out , but then after talking to my OB he said to make sure my abdomen was shielded ... So hopefully everything will turn out ok

I just had two wisdom teeth pulled this morning. They have bothered me for years, but I kept putting off getting them removed. I don't know if the pregnancy made them hurt worse, but the other night I couldn't stand the pain. Now I'm worried about whether or not it was truly safe to have them removed. My dr. and the oral surgeon said it was fine, but I'm still scared. Hopefully they will heal soon and my baby will be okay.

Did they put you under?? That is when I would be worried. I was also told that the only time it was safe to have any type of dental work done is in the second trimester.

No. They just used local anesthesia. I had contacted my dr. (and spoke with a nurse) who assured me that dental work was fine. I also let my oral surgeon (who is also a Medical Dr.) know that I was pregnant and how far along I am. I asked both the nurse and the Dr./surgeon how far along I really am at 13 1/2 weeks. They both said I am in the second trimester. I go to my ob/gyn on Tuesday, so I am just waiting to make sure everything is okay.
