not baby related but need help

short version..i had 3 cars ,1 more than we needed to keep((car insurance in jersy is outrageouse)) so we decided to sell 1..so i get my cousins friend to put it on his auto lot for me and he said no charge,,if i get any offers ill call you...so i told him i didnt want to keep it insured (($$$)) so he said ,cancell it long as its still registerd and has plates i can keep it on my lot...so i get a call today from him thinking we got someone who wanted the car....no it was to tell me that the car was stolen ,,,now i have no insurance on it to get any $$ for it..and all he had to say was he was very sorry....so my question is should he have to pay me what i was asking for the car..being it was in his posession while it was stolen..ohh and it was stolen off the street, not his lot he parked on the side street and forgot to move it back before he left for the night.....also i dont belive it was stolen...what he didnt know was the car had an anti theft device on it where you could not just hot wire it....the car was full of after market parts(((my husband toy)) and the engine in it was worth atleast 6 grand...so i think this dirty crook took the car and stripped him self for the parts....we were asking 5grand for the car so should i make him pay it to me...

I think you're probably screwed. And I think you're right about the guy lying to you. I'm sorry   But I think that if you try to get anything from the guy, you won't get anything. But you can still go to the cops, right?

Do you have any signed paperwork saying that he was taking responsibilty for the car? Legally, he should have to pay for it, but unless you have proof, you might be outta luck.

Sounds pretty wierd. I think he had something to do with it. I dont know if I would report it, but I would just ask him alot of questions, to see if he'll give in, and then report it. I dont know, it sux

I would go ahead and report it, but it does suck , I really dont know if you can get anything out of the guy.

i would report it possibly take him to small claims court but onlyif it is really worth it. i do believe that he had something to do with it but if there isnt any paperwork it might not hold up anywhere. good luck but i think it is a lost cause

This seems a bit fishy. First has he reported the theft to the police? Because the car was in his possesion at the time, he does have responsibility for it. Once he allowed you to place the car on his lot he took full responsibility. Second, since he owns the car lot as a business, he should have some sort of insurance and his insurance would pay for any thefts or damages that may occur.
I would deffinately file a police report about your car. And then if he refuses to pay I would file a small claims suit against him.

we didnt have any offical paper work done..just a verbal contract....and he did call the police and file a police report...and so did i because the car had my plates on it and registraion in it still....the police officer who i spoke with said it seemed fishy to him also....because i showed him the paper work for the anti left device..he said the only way any one would of taken the car is with the keys or a tow truck....aslo when you have after market parts on a car you have to keep all the paper work to show proof of payment((basically not stolen )) i also had to show the police all of those papers also to prove the value on the car and they wanted to register all the part ## in case they show up any time soon.....i am thinking iam screwd too..but i did tell the guy i was coming over there tomorrow so we can discuss $$$...and the guy was like..well i guess i can file an insurance claim but he seemed like he wasnt gonna do it....so i guess ill just have to see tomorrow...
