Vesicoureteral Reflux: Deflux Injection?!?

posted 7th Apr '11
Destiny has had two seperate "surgeries" to inject deflux to try to correct her bilateral Vesicoureteral Reflux. As far as we know the second round of injections were a success and she has since been fully potty trained... Over the last week to week in a half she has been having accidents (which is completely unlike her) so I am now woundering if maybe the deflux is wearing down and she may be loosing the sensation to need to urinate again. Has anyone else went through this? Or have any tips or advice? TIA!

I've had deflux injections in the past and I had to have them repeated about 2-3 times. Not sure if they wore off or if the doc just didn't inject enough each time though. I have a surgically altered bladder so I'm not familiar with what your LO is having issues with. But it sounds like she may have a UTI because of the bedwetting.

The VUR is a genetic disorder in which the valve's that are at the connection between the ureter and the bladder are either non-existant or do not work; so in return the urine collects in the bladder and when she should have the sensation to urinate from the pressure in her bladder it just flows backwards up the ureter and back into the kidneys, with no senstation. It causes repeated UTI's, kidney infections, and hydronaphrosis... she hasn't had any of the sypmtoms for an infection like she used to... I use to be able to tell when she was starting to develop an infection with-in hours of it starting, but like I said she hasn't had any of those so far so I am confused!! Sorry if my spelling is off...

Gotcha. I have an augmented bladder and have had a procedure done so I can cath through my belly button. I would def call her doctor to get his opinion. Could be a UTI, could be deflux wearing down.

I will call him... it just worries me bacause he told us he is only willing to do the deflux injections one more time and if its unsuccessful the third time around he would have no other option then to do a full reconstruction of her ureters.

I'm sorry mama. My doctor was the same way - I would leak through my belly button at night and had 3 or 4 rounds of injections. It finally got to the point where the deflux was doing nothing so he had to go in and surgically try to fix the problem. How old is your LO? Is she young enough that she might not remember surgery if she has to have it?

I would definitely call her urologist and have them set up another VCUG just to check and make sure the deflux hasn't worn off. My LO goes next Tuesday for her second deflux injection...hoping it works and it's the last time we have to go through that!

Hopefully it works this time for her. If Destiny's injections are wearing off they can only do it one more time, I just hate to have to put her through all that again!

Yes, VCUGs are awful, and traumatic. Last time they offered us nitrous oxide and it helped a lot through the VCUG- I highly recommend it if your hospital offers it!

They always give her an "awake sedation" for her VCUG's. By the time we leave and make it home (hour and a half drive) she doesn't even remeber being at the hospital at all... which I LOVE!!!!

They never offered Siri the deflux   and we went straight to surgery in Aug 2009 and she's having surgery again May 4 <sigh> This time they're doing an appendicovesicostomy (also known as the Mitrofanoff technique)

Hope Destiny won't have to do the surgery

I'm hoping not too! I'll keep you and Siri in my thoughts... poor baby has been through too much! Hopefully this will be her last surgery!

Prayers for Destiny too! She's been on a rough road too, both of your girls have. I have a hard enough time with just HER having issues, IDK how I'd find the strength if both kids had issues

I just posted about what the latest surgery entails in the GDS thread

Thanks!! Thankfully my yougest one have outgrown her VUR and the dr thinks she has "out grown" her asthma as well (she hasn't needed her alburteral in over a year!) But her excema is still really bad. And they've put her on muti-vitamins now to help with her eating issues and to see if it will help her to stop eating random crap like deoderant and lotion lol...

I'll go look at the GDS thread now!
