HPV

posted 31st Jan '08
I had my yearly pap smear 2 weeks ago and the results came in yesterday. The verdict: they found atypical cells which looked like HPV.   They're setting up an appointment for me with an OBGYN to get tested and everything.

I missed last year's pap smear b/c I was all depressed since my husband was deployed to Iraq. 2006 pap smear came back normal. The doctor said that they wanted to check for cervical cancer and all that since he knew I was TTC.

I can only think the worst here. I was really sexually active before I met my husband so there's a number of ways I could have acquired it.

Could this be a reason why my husband and I haven't conceived??

THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS BUY ONE OF THE TEST AND FIND OUT WHEN YOU START TO OVULATE AND THEN TAKE IT FROM THERE AND BY THE TIME YOU DO THAT YOU SHOULD BE PREGNANT IF YOU ARE ALREADY ARE

Hun, I know how scared you are. My best friend went in for a Pap when they were TTC and they told her the same thing. The trouble is, she has only had one partner, and as far as we know he has only had one too! I urged her to get a second opinion and she did, and they told her she did not have it. That alot of girls have abnormal cells that are abnormal, but it does not mean she has HPV.... Now she is 30 weeks pregnant! Get a second opinion!

Yes, it can because I have HPV, which can cause pre-cancerous cells on your cervix, which in turn CAN prevent you from conceiving....then again, HPV doesn't prevent you 100%, being I was due yesturday. Good luck with everything! Have you spoken to your doctor about this? Please remember that there are SOOOO many strands of HPV and not all are linked to cervical cancer. I'm not trying to worry you....but I'd still just ask your doctor. Good luck!

Oh, and you can spread HPV so for all you know, you might have even gotten it from your husband from his past prior to being with you. That being said, don't have sex IF you ever have a break-out.

My husband keeps telling me it will be okay, but I always think the worst. I'm actually looking forward to seeing an OBGYN instead of my regular family doctor. I'm hoping for the best.

in 2003, I had a pap come back abnormal. The nurse over the phone said it looked like cancer. I was at work and in tears. I had my dad call them back and they said they made a mistake that it was cervical dysplasia and that I probably had HPV (which can be noncancerous cells). I never heard of that before, so I did research and found alot of information about it. The next step might be that they want to do a colposcopy, which is just where they get a better look at the cervix, vagina, and vulva. I then had to have a Cryotherapy. This involves freezing the abnormal cells with liquid nitrogen. After that I had to go back ever month and have a pap. I have since that time had clear paps and I have no signs that it has come back. I know it's scary but it's good that you are being looked at and they can help you. I had no signs of having other than the abnormal pap. I wish you luck, if you have any questions, feel free to message me!!!

What they will do is usually they do another test where they test cells from your cervix to find out if it is actually HPV or not. I had the same thing happen to me, anything can cause an abnormal pap smear, luckly everything was okay and it was not HPV. The only thing is when my son was born where they took the sample from my cervix, I had some issues dialiating, but all went well with not big issues.

Okay... HPV can come in several forms.
I have it as do 75% of all sexually active women.
Don't get to scared yet.
I know exactly when and where I acquired mine from because lucky me (thats sarcasm) my boyfriend managed to acquire it from some girl he was cheating on me with when he was out of town... which resulted in warts... TMI, but truthful.
Warts are also HPV, its the same thing just some raise and some don't. If yours did not raise, it means you contracted flat warts, and they probably cleared on their own, leaving you with HPV scarring which is believed to cause cervical cancer in SOME women. (I know this because I worked in a lab when I was in college, and we did the tests for all of these things... I handled paps all day there, so I'm well versed in my STD knowledge)
Just because you carry HPV does NOT mean that you will at some point in time develop cervical cancer. It means that you MIGHT and that your risk increases a bit.
I would suggest your husband have himself checked as well. Its a test that you have to request to be done. When I came up with my lovely case, I scaned my boyfriend before saying anything and saw NOTHING on him with the naked eye... but I KNEW it had to have come from him. So.... I made my guy go to the doctor and they swabbed his penis down with a solution that is made primarily with vinegar, and they use a special light to look at it. It will typically light up like a christmas tree if he is a carrier. Because remember, HPV is warts... flat or raised. Flat warts don't show up...

But I have HPV,and I got accidently pregnant when I wasn't supposed to concieve at all due to thyroid cancer and radiation....
That being said. HPV shouldn't prevent you from getting pregnant. Talk to you doctor.

and take a few deep breaths... It will all be okay   I promise.

*I figured I should edit this to say that I did NOT get pregnant with the boyfriend of years ago who I got HPV from.... I got pregnant with my HUSBAND who I have been with for almost 5 years now.... I don't know why, but I felt a clarification was necessary

I was also diagnosed with HPV over two years ago. I went a had a coloscopy and the doctor said that the abnoral cells were nothing and weren't going to turn into anything. I have had two paps since then, in two different hospitols and have not been told that I have it. The doctor told me that some strands just clear up on their own, your body takes care of it. You can get genital warts, but I never did, and it hasn't come back. Try not to stress about it, as MommyMeri said, sooo many women out there have it.
