My docs said Zoloft was best for PPD b/c it has had the most clinical studies on it and Zoloft affects breastmilk the least.

Have you tried Lexapro? It has worked tremendously for me. Maybe you can ask your doctor about it?

Hey guys I really need help. My son was born May 19th and since then I have been seriously depressed. This is absolutely horrible. I am scared to death that something is going to happen to him so I don't get any sleep because I stay up watching him making sure he is okay. I am terrified of the future and what it holds. It's no longer just the husband and I and I don't know how to react to that. I love my son and it kills me to know that I feel this way. I should be so happy right now and I'm just not and knowing I feel this way makes me feel even worse. There is no escape. I feel like my husband is better at this whole paret thing than I am. I am jealous because he went back to work today and it's like everything is back to normal for him and I am stuck feeling like I want to die. I get even more upset thinking about feeling this way because my son is absolutely precious and doesn't deserve a mom like me   He deserves the world. I don't want to take anti depressants because I took em once inhigh school and they changed my personality   Everyone says this is a temporary thing but I feel like I am seriously going crazy and it's not going to change. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :'(

I think you should call and discuss this with your doctor. Sounds like you have ppd and they can give you some meds till you are doing better. It happens to many people so DO NOT feel embarressed OR like a horrible mother.

Hey there I know how you feel. Like brianamarie21 said, you really need to talk to your doctor about it. You said you took anti-depressants in high-school and it made you different. But this is a completely different situation, and maybe you could find the right medication for you. There are alot of them out there, and I can truly say that they have saved my life. Don't feel bad or beat yourself down, this is a chemical imbalance in your brain and it's NOT YOUR FAULT. Just let your doctor know how you're feeling. Take care honey! Oh and by the way, I am naming my son Lucas as well! BEAUTIFUL NAME!

Hi I am currently stillin my 12th week of pregnancy.. I am dealing and always have been with bipolar disorder. I find myself more depressed now then ever and everything is so upsetting to me. Me and my boyfriend (dan) are really at eachother and I am worried we will not last long if I don't get help. Also I am very worried that when I do have my baby I am going to have PPD and I scared my baby is feeling all the bad stuff I do and is going to end up with the same problems as me.. My doctor is also worried about this.. Does anyone know any tricks to help the relationship and make me and the baby feel better?!?

Are you currently taking any meds to treat your BiPolar? If not you might want to talk to your doctor about it. There are some safe medication out there that you can take during your pregnancy and I'm sure it will help you!

You may just have a really bad case of baby blues. Usually PPD is not diagnosed until 3-4 weeks PP. It hasn't even been two weeks yet for you...

Regardless, this is definitely worth bringing up to your doc. As everyone says, it will get better. It just takes time...and the waiting can be just as bad!! In the meantime, you have your doc and BG.

Your doc is also worried about what exactly?

You don't have to worry about what the baby feels...it's not like the baby senses what you sense. A pinch on your arm does not feel like a pinch on its arm, ya know? Your bipolar feelings are yours, not the baby's.

As far as the relationship -- you can't fix it until you fix yourself. Any therapist will tell you that. So 1) Are you still taking bipolar meds? 2) If not, why? Did you doc okay this? 3) Is it even possible to be bipolar AND have PPD?? I'm thinking no, but I could be wrong 4) Regardless of #3, PPD won't affect you until next year literally so don't stress about it now. The less stress the better.

I am currently not taking anything for the Bipolar I have no for years.. I decided at a young age I didnt like to take the meds.. I do see now that it would be a good idea.. Me and my doc have talked about if it does get worse to let him know.. I am just worried the meds will effect the baby.. Also my boyfriend does not like the fact of the meds and would put up a fight with me about it... My doc said that most women with Bipolar are most likley to end up with PPD when the baby is born.. I guess it is just really hard not to stress about the little things I just want what is best for my baby!

Hm. Meds change a lot in a short amount of time. Perhaps there is something for Bipolar disorders that is okay to take throughout an entire pregnancy? I know my psych said Zoloft can be taken during pregnancy to help prevent PPD. Perhaps that's an option for you??

And, if your bf is going to fight you on this he's an ass. To not take meds for a chemical imbalance can be serious. He just needs to get over himself. Your health is very important right now!

Yeah I will deffinatly have to speak with my doc on my next appointment and see what he has to say.. Yeah by boyfriend can be the ass at times, its just that he does not know exactly what it is and is hard headed and will refuse to read about it with me, he thinks that its something that can be fixed with out meds when really it can not! He is a good guy all around just very hard headed!!

I would tell him if he refuses to learn about it then he can't have input on how you handle it. Simple as that. You don't need advice from someone who knows nothing about what is actually happening to your body. Maybe then he'll get the hint...
