He is here!
My induction was scheduled for Saturday the 19th at 8:00pm. I figured since inductions usually go quicker than natural labor that he would be born around 3 or 4 in the morning, no dice. The nurse told me they would give me vaginal suppositories every 2 hours to soften and thin my cervix and probably start the pitocin in the morning, depending on how things were going.
They gave me my first suppository at 10:00pm and it basically put me right into labor. I came in dilated 1cm and when they checked me at 12:00am to give me the second suppository, I was already dilated to 3 and having regular contractions. (They started at 2-3 minutes apart and remained that way throughout my labor)
I had steady back pain and what felt like menstrual cramps, with sharp pains in my cervix at every contraction (and stronger cramping). It hurt but not worse than the worst menstrual cramps I've experienced.
At 3am they checked me to see if I had progressed, if I had they were going to break my water. I was only 3 or 4 cm by that time so they started pitocin instead. The pitocin made my contractions incredibly painful, I could no longer sit still through them. My fiance woke up at this point and sat with me while I dealt with the pain. He had been sleeping since about 1am.
I had planned on going natural and not getting an epidural, but I finally gave in at 6am and got one. I was so tired I was falling asleep in between the contractions and my fiance kept falling asleep in my lap rubbing my leg.
I decided it would be a good idea that we both got a little bit of sleep. (I still hadn't progressed past 4 or 5cm at this point)
They broke my water after the epidural kicked in, and checked me at about 9:00am but I was still at 5cm so they cranked my picocin up (This made me glad I got an epidural... they started me at 2 whatevers per whatever of the pitocin, which was painful enough, and by the end I was getting 14.. the max they give is 20)
At about 11:30 I started feeling pressure on my rectum with each contraction. I decided I'd tell the nurse the next time she came in, but I wasn't going to buzz her. Just when I was starting to change my mind she FINALLY came back in a few minutes after 12. I told her about the pressure and she checked me again (I had not been checked since I was at 5cm at 9:00am). She said "I see the head, don't push I'll get the doctor"
. The doctor came in, and I pushed for maybe 6 or 7 contractions and Robert popped out. I didn't tear or need stitches, and I didn't poop myself
(I was really worried about that) It was so fast, and a breeze after the epi! I think I probably would have been able to go without it, or at least lasted a little longer, had I been laboring through the day and not been up laboring all night long.
